All knowing ones of AVF... What's this?! We moved house not long ago and just ignore it really. It's near to the phone socket and obviously something to do with a phone but what?!!

Also... The old owners decided to add a phone socket upstairs. They've basically added an extension to the main phone socket in the hall way and then tacked the wire over doors etc and outside then up the side of the house. Can I just cut the bloody wire? It's wired into the master phone socket. Loads of tiny little wires... Can I just cut the extension or will I need to unwire it in the socket?!

    Thanks.

Re the second part of my question... The extension cable just goes into the bottom of the master socket - pic attached. Can I simply cut the wires from the extension close to the connection or do I need to remove completely?

    Thanks!

    Just disconnect the extension pair.

Didn't realise they'd just pull out. Extension sorted, looks so much better without cable everywhere.

Now... What's the weird box thing...?!

Could be an old home alarm dialling system

Arrggghhh I've seen these, sure it's a restricter, I think that when it's connected you can't pick up a second handset and listen in.
or could be a call restricter ie block international or premium numbers.

    I think

Looks a bit like the interface that used to sit in the phone line when I had NTL dialup as an ISP. IIRC, it routed phone calls through NTL's network rather BT's without having to dial a prefix first.

Is it not the old fashioned first box that comes off of the mains BT connection that allows a phone to be plugged into.

We don't have BT lines here so wondering if it was something to do with that. It's on the side of the stairs, not really near the master socket.

I'm not even sure if it is wired into anything externally, can't open it up. It's got what looks like a power adaptor plug too.

    Strange.

So... I've plugged the phone line into this box and my phone into it... Without dealing anything I get a Scottish woman saying "Sorry, the number you have dialled is not in service. Please try again".

It's obviously trying to dial something straight away!
