    Hi,

I'm not sure what the cheapest progressive scan dvd player in the UK is, but I do know that in America the cheaper prog. scan players had crude de-interlacing chips that lacked vital features such as 3/2 pulldown detection, and therefore didn't really offer the main benefits of progressive scan.

I'm not familiar with any of these low cost units in the UK, but I think it would be safe to say that they wouldn't offer the same level of performance that would be available from a better quality player.

The Compacks appears to be nearly identical to the Cambridge Audo DVD55 that Richer Sounds sells. I have the Compacks model and its very good. I really can't fault it so far. I especially like the remote control. Its actually made by Sampo I believe.

Where can you get this compacks from and how much is it? Is it worth it if you don't have a progressive scan tv?

It comes from Safeway, and costs £49. It's PAL and NTSC progressive, region hackable with play .JPG,MP3 and MPG discs and stuff.

It's dead fast, has no visible layer change and is silent. It's great for the money ;)

The only question is how long they will last :D

If it is the same as the Cambrigde Audio DVD55, the prog-scan image is very poor. If you need prog-scan, and have a big telly / plasma / projector, avoid this player.

The interlaced image is excellent tho - pin sharp and nice colours. But in P-scan it's blurred with lots of ghosting

    Re: one_jedi
    Compacks DVD5000 it is.

It outputs RGB via SCART, it also has s-video, component and composite outputs.

Co-axial and optical digital outputs, and anlogue outputs for the DD5.1 decoder.

Re: Prog scan image issues, works fine on my AE300 but there are reports of problems in the DVDforums 'bargain' thread when used with the AE100 and the Z1 :(

Does this model output progressive RGB like a couple of the Arcams? (Choose RGB for output then preess the PROG button to flick between on the Compacks remote). Someone with a plasma would need to confirm this I expect. Would this be RGBS (with sync on composite)?

It also has a built in DD and Pro Logic II decoder which is great!

I tried the Compack with my AE100, it offers poor progressive scan for pal and NTSC discs, the de-interlacer seems to remove jaggies and shimmering, but there was bad ghosting on interlaced and progressive scan, I also sufferedjuddering with NTSC discs.
You get what you pay for :( I am going to wait for a decent progressive pal player from maybe Panasonic or Denon (faroudja de-interlacer), which are pretty much the same in the States, and get good test reviews.

The juddering you speak of is only because you had left the player on pal only mode in the menu's. The player when set to multi gives a pal image with region2 dvds and ntsc with region 1 etc. There is no juddering unless wrongly set which is the same for most dvd players. I've not come across any bad ghosting. The main problem I had was grain which was removed when I stopped using the supplied scart cable. I have a AE100 projector and find this dvd player quite superb. I really can't fault it. I don't think anyone's claiming it has best picture out there but what hifi gave the dvd57 4/5 for picture and I'm pretty sure the compacks is the same as the dvd57, dvd55 and Compacks DVD500 are all basically the same player except the CA dvd57 has dvd audio built in. The fact remains that most of us that have bought the Compacks player are very pleased with it. It may not have quite as good a picture as the Toshiba 330 but then what has?

Glad to here someone has had success with the AE100 and the Compack, I was really hoping for cheap progressive pal with this player, but not so, the ghosting was fairly obvious to me, but I also had a problem with picture breakup with interlaced.
Maybe I didn't try NTSC for R1 discs, I just lost interest after seeing the ghosting :(

Excuse my ignorance. But this Compacks DVD5000 player. How do you tell it's Pal/NTSC Progressive? There is no mention in the on-line spec or the manual.

Also can you switch between Prog & interlaced. If so how (via setup menu) ?

    Thanks

    Paul

From my experience the Compack isn't worth going for, some have had success with projectors, but like me and others there is a problem with ghosting with progressive scan.

    Winnie
There is no info for progressive scan on the website, but you can tell if it is outputting progressive by the menu on your projector, it should show 480p for NTSc and 625p or 576p for pal.
Yes you can switch between interlaced and progressive.

    * Am running thru a Panny AE100.
    * DVDx2 is a software DVD player for Xbox which allows you to play DVD's without the dongle and remote. You have to have a chipped machine to run it.
Someone recently wrote a patch that allowed progressive scan output which is stunning.
PM me if you want it.

Thanks for the offer :) But I don't have an xbox :(
I was just wondering how it was done.
If you want to know how good the xbox is at progressive scan just spin Star Trek Insurrection, the intro panning the village shows jaggies and shimmering, look at the low stone wall and the roof tiles, it should look bad in interlaced but with a good progressive player it should be none existent.

Well, if anyones interested. The DVD playback from my chipped Xbox running DVD-x2 with progressive patch is much better then the Compacks 5000.

The Xbox is higher resolution and no ghosting effects.

    The Compacks is going back!

There is a section devoted to the Compacks unit here.

In addition, some folk are reporting that their player is VCR friendly, whilst others are not - please, if you own one, complete our survey here.

    Thanks :)

Ok, You got my attention :) So where could I get a chipped Xbox from? Also where can I get DVD-X2 with progressive patch? I take it that the chipped console meens you can play NTSC and Pal software.
Do you get 480p for NTSC and 625P (576p) for pal progressive on your AE100?

    Thanks for any help :)
