Just seen this on webelectricals.co.uk http://www.webelectricals.co.uk/cgi...0d9d19262741ac1001580658+EN/products/1012&2D1 a few weeks ago someone posted on this forum a link to a th37pa30 (viera) for £1550.00 the only difference to the pe30b being no built in freeview, every other specification was exactly the same, but when I visited the site there was no sign of it, but the above link seems to good to be true, after all if you make comparisons £700.00 for freeview seems a little bit over the top, or am I missing something.

I think it does use the same panel but its £2,079.99 thats £380 more than the PW6 from Richer Sounds. I like the look of the Viera on the stand but I think they look odd on a wall because of the way the bottom curls in. I also prefer the skinny bezels over the thick gloss black ones that seem to be trendy ATM.

I can't find any info (or even if it exists) on the TH42PA30 on any Pansonic site. The two places I have found selling it show different pictures (the other site shows a panel rather than the Viera design.)

Any retailer on here know if it's the same panel and the Viera design?

Its the same panel, Viera design, only without an integrated digital tuner.

I think the TH42PA30 is the same as the TH42PE30 but it's a european model so it has a analogue tuner instead of freeview digital.

Does this affect a warranty? i.e. do you have to have a UK spec rather than a european

Ring and ask these guys cos they will sell it.

It is European model, with only Analogue Tuner, no Freeview otherwise exactly the same.

The thick black surrounds are not just a trend factor. They help with the percieved contrast levels of black on the screen. The same principle that applies to projection screens having black borders all around. It basically fools the eye.

The PW6 isn't meant as a consumer model as it's prime purpose is for corporate display purposes where perceived black and home cinema is not so important. The bezel is therefore very thin. That of course doesn't stop many people buying PDP's.

Sounds interesting! Does anyone know the answer to the warranty question? I'd hate to think I have to post it to Europe if summat goes wrong!

An interesting reason for the glossy black surround that has become trendy recently.
I would argue that if you put a real black (like the surround) next to the attempt at black that all displays make (Plasma is still not as good as CRT) then your perception of the picture black level when compared to the surround will be less but your perception of the white level will increase.
I would imagine that a black boarder is more likely to enhance contrast level (that is the white level) rather than the brightness level (black level). This is an important distinction. There seems to be a lot of confusion between brightness and contrast.
