I'm at a crossroads and I want to make the best choice for the long run. 12 years ago I bought a Z5500 speaker system and I was happy that it was the best I could get for games and music. The 5.1 effect was great and it sounded good for music, though not as good and an amp and stereo speakers. Now the electronics inside got old and are beyond economic repair, so I want to spend on something that will last, but my head is full of questions.
So, what's the best now, more than a decade on? I feel like I must be way behind on sound tech for PCs. I've got a creative x-fi soundcard, is that still good or do we connect to our speakers a better way now? Is HDMI or USB the way to connect to a sound system?
Is 5.1 still that relevant in games? Do most games even use 3d positional audio or is it old hat? If not, then I can get a simple stereo setup that will be great for music. I listen to music a fair bit on my PC now.
Knowledge me up please! What's your awesome setup and what did it cost? What would you buy?
