With either of those two models, is the channel number permanently displayed?

I have an earlier Sony VCR and it's a major annoyance that the channel number disappears from the fascia display a couple of seconds after changing channels. There are times when it's reassuring to be able to glance at the machine and check that you're recording what you think you're recording.

A sound level indicator would be pleasant, too, to check that you're recording anything at all...

Are the scart connectors one above the other ? I have a problem with my panny in that they are side by side and I can't plus in 2 IXOS scart cables as one gets in the way of the other. If the sockets are one above the other there would be no problem

You might want to consider the SLV X9 if you can get one. A bit pricier but much bettter looking than the SLVE8?? and SLVE7??. It was built to match AV hifi kit so liooks the business and "according to Sony" has beeter sound and a few bells and whistles to boot.

If I wasnt after SVHS I would have considered this to match my DVD

Best Sony vcr is without a doubt the SL-HF950 - you can pick them up for £500 s/h if you are lucky!

Mmm, excellent choice for the budget minded, and easily purchased media as well, every corner shop sells blank beta tapes!!!!

I can see you are a fan of beta, but surely even you have to admit that with a spare £500 a new DVD recorder would have the edge on a 2nd hand Beta player!

    But which recordable DVD format?

    I want the following

    DTTV tuner
    Bit stream record mode
will play in a Sony DVP-S715

    As to blank tapes - I have got arount 300 - including about 20 Pro-X L500

I was _given_ a Sony Vhs deck (something or other 715) and it is a pile of poopoo.

Only good points being timer to scart recording

Picture is poor much worse than Sanyo M40 and the 950 is so much better.

Even going into rewind picture search from play takes ages - should be instant.

Loose power for 1 second and the time has gone - 30 min on Sanyo, hour on 950.

I tested the 950 on the following

can record the 3 1/2 MHz test card bars

Recorded pictures from Nokia box with one of the old pay channels are indistingushable from live (Discovery Wings was the test). (I use composite as RGB was taken up by DVD and DC) and who needs an ex Ondigital box for actually viewing - just taping.

I think the 950 can easily be said to be the best UK Sony home vcr ever.

We never got ED-Beta here (literally broadcast quality):( :(

Completely true. This was the pinnacle of Sony's VCR development. Unrivalled picture and sound quality, more navigation controls and edit features than anything else and far more connection options. Would you like one? ß
