Can anyone tell me what the best freeview box is for the money??

I bought a cheapo about a year ago and it's burnt out tonight. Which is pretty crap.

I'm not looking at spending much but I don't want anything crap, the one I had was always breaking up and freezing.

    Anyone have any recommendations?

I have had three different box's in the last couple of years from different price ranges. The best one for me is the Sony VTX 800 U, nothings gone wrong with it.

Thanks, it looks like that's been discontinued now but amazon are replacing it with the Phillips DTR200. Don't suppose you know if that one is ok??

I've been looking at the Humax PVR-9200T. Seems ok so far, just gonna do a lil more researching.

I bought this some time ago from Tesco. At first it was rubbish. It locked up on a daily basis. Then one day a magic download appeared after that it works 100% and has proved very reliable on a bedroom set. Able to produce a letterboxed 16:9 picture which I wanted. The Amazon price seems a good one.

Sony VTX-D800 all the way. Never locks up, well you'll be extremely unlucky if it did. Brill in the pic quality and sound department. Very responsive in whatever you ask it to do. Yes it has been discontinued but well worth seeking out a s/h unit.

Thanks folks, Unfortunately the Sony is discontinued and I can't find a second hand one and the Humax is way too expensive at £170.

Any more ideas? I really need to get a new one but don't want to waste my money like last time.

Search ebay for a Sony. I know some on there are going for silly prices but try to persevere or ask in the AV wanted ads forum.

Humax seem pretty good, my parents have a Goodmans and that works fine. My STB is a Philips - which I got for £20 down from £50 after a labelling mistake at my local Dixons. People have said bad things about Philips but I have had no problem with mine, aside from the fact the EPG is a little basic.

I don't think Turk will be telling until it's been snapped up. Probably a 1 off if not a mistake.

    Yep, it was a mistake!!

I'd seen the one for the Sony Unit but clicked on the wrong link which took me to the one for the remote. Gutted.

    Never mind, on we go.

    Anybody have any more ideas?

Thought the sony was too good to be true. But I've checked a few forums in search of a recommended box, and generally speaking, the Wharfedale DV832B/BN comes out very well. It's apparently only available at Argos and is currently retailing at £34.99 reduced from £39.99, .....if you can get one. Nowhere local to me has one, so good luck, you may be more fortunate than I!!!

My local Makro had piles of the Sony boxes in last week for about £60. You'll need to know someone with a membership card however...

Darn it. I've already ordered a Digihome DVB915 from Amazon for the bedroom set. Seemed to get good reviews for the price, but that was before I found this thread and now I'm worried I've made a mistake... :(

    Anyone got any advice?

They last years. My Sis has one that is 3 years+ old and still going strong.
This is a *hand me down* from myself, I've since purchased a newer one.

It's there! The forementioned freeview box is not!
However yesterday there was an Hitachi unit for about £23! I know nowt about it tho'.

Yeah, I got onto that site eventually but it was the DV832B not the BN model as stated.

I've read bad reviews about the lesser model.

I ordered one over the phone as I couldn't get it in my basket, and I asked if it was the BN, which it was. Service was brilliant, and it arrived the next morning!!!!
Working great, (especially at that price!!!)
