Whats the best format to use, MP3, Atrac3, or Atrac3+? I heard MP3 doesn't have gapless, is this true?

I presume you ask 'cos you have a Sony MP3 player.

Yes, MP3 as a format isn't gapless. Some players try to overcome this by faking it, using info from id3 tags to play tracks seamlessly

Sony do claim Atrac is gapless, and I've never heard a gap with my HD3. Also many have said that at lower bitrates, Atrac does prove Sony's claim that it sounds better at lower bitrates than at other formats. Of course, at high bitrates the diffs are minimal, if distinguishable if you look for them

Do bear in mind Atrac is Sony players only. Not a prob if you don't have a non-Sony player

I could talk all day on this, but SQ is subjective. Try ripping 3 tracks in 3 bitrates/formats each and hear for yourself. If a lower bitrate sounds good use that, and save space. If you're not limited by capacity, might as well choose a high bitrate

    Bit-for-bit, Atrac3+ beats mp3. For compatibility, nothing beats mp3.

Just got my HD5. I'm ripping my large CD collection in Atrac3+ at 192 kbps. The 64kbps doesn't quite do it for me, plus I'll be playing the HD5 over a stereo sometimes. The 192 rate is a good compromise for me, sounds fine.

OTOH, got the gf a Sony flash player. I'm encodong her CDs at 64 kbps. Lots of older music, lower quality cd source, and she'l just be using headphones.

Is it possible for Atrac3+ to be played at the highest bit rate? I only see it at 64. And yeah, just got an HD5. Right now most of my songs are only Atrac 3 at 128 bit rate.

    atrac3+ 128 doesn't work on the HD5, Use 192kbps or 256kbps(max compatable rate)

Upgrade to ver 3.2, although only US ver is out. Sony are dragging their heels over UK ver
