Is the board an Asus P5VD2-MX or an Asus P5V-VM DH?

In either case, it appears to support up to a Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66ghz, or Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93ghz if you're made of money! :smashin:

P4M890 is the VIA chipset on the motherboard, not the motherboard itself. You'll have to find out which motherboard you're using before you can be certain which CPUs it'll support (the chipset suggests 1066Mhz FSB Core 2 Duos are the best it'll support, but manufacturers sometimes guarantee support beyond which the chipset is officially capable of so you may be able to use a Core 2 Quad Q6600/Q6700.)

strange how it doesnt take the quad cores. looks like the fastest is the E6700, you might find that the E6600 is a better bet as its more common and a lot cheaper. its not much slower so the saving might be worth it. its a nice chip and should overclock up to 3.0ghz if you get a decent cooler. i had the Freezer 7 pro on mine, theyre dirt cheap and provide very good cooling. about 10c lower than the intel stock cooler and easy to install.

best place and cheapest to buy one of theses cpu E6600

Ebay or the computing forums here, Intel no longer manufacture them, so you'll struggle to find one new. You shouldn't be paying any more than £50 for one.
