What's the best arcade racing game ever made? Could also include "arcade style" racing games like Burnout... but most definitely not Gran Turismo style simulations.

My pick would be the original Outrun and Daytona from the arcades. Then all versions of Burnout for the home.

    Outrun
    - fast, fun, addictive gameplay.
    - Awesome music.
    - Introduced a choice of route
    - Great Cabinet
    - Great graphics for the day

Yep I spent far too much time on that machine and have owned about 6 different home versions. Pure brilliance!!

    Honourable mentions to:-

    Daytona
    Power Drift
    Sega Rally
    Super Hang On
    F355 Challenge
    Monaco GP
    Super Monaco GP
    Outrun 2
    Virtua Racer
    Crazy Taxi
Wec Le Mans (the only non Sega title  )

I guess you could say that Sega really knew how to make an arcade racer!

EDIT: I've just stuck WipeOut Pure on my PSP again and have decided that this game also deserves an honourable mention - pure class!

    Nice list Cas Fan.

Forgot about Super Hang-On. Many a 20p coin passed through my fingers stood by that machine.

Crazy Taxi on Dreamcast also ruled. Much better than the follow-ups, they messed around with the fornula too much IMHO for 2 & 3.

Sega really know their stuff when it comes to arcade racers.

Good game but I didn't include that one as although it was a coin op it was very sim based. It even had a clutch and a key  and for it's day was very realistic. I love the Megadrive version and used to spend hours on it trying to beat my best times. I was very impressed by this in it's day though as the polygon graphics were amazing compared to the usual sprite based racers.

Hmm actually i feel a bash on the MD version coming on now! :smashin:

It had to be Daytona in my local arcade, you got to sit in a full sized car complete with steering wheel and gear stick (obviously) and it had a working stereo in it which you could take your audio tapes and listen to them whilst you race

used to be outrun or sega rally for me but since the imergence of the burnout series they all fail to this. never had some much fun with a racing game helped by some awesome multiplayer and mini games

edit not really thought about it but you seem to be on about arcade as in big machine you ply money into   but for acedey style racing burnout rules all !!! :D

Ridge Racer and F355 (but why no save...aarrgh!) are the best of all the ones mentioned for me.

However all time favourite that gave hours of fun for me and my mates was Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga. I live in constant hope for Stunt Car Racer II turning up some day.

Indeed, i'd love to see an 8 player live enabled version on the 360! Come on Geoff Crammond, you know it makes sense!! That is just quite simply one racer that is made for X-Box live - I played 2 players on the Amiga version, using a serial link cable for an unhealthy amount of time - it was the dogs! :smashin:

Stunt Racer ruled. I remember being amazed at how well it conveyed a real sense of zipping round those hilarious tracks. When you took off a jump you really had a sense of being airborne. Happy days.

Outrun 2 is worth checking out. Not the most in-depth game in the world, but good fun especially on the "Challenges" mode. Also, I think it can be bought for about a tenner these days.

daytona for pure multiplayer madness and sega rally for outrageous power slides. Special mention should go to the ridge racer in the life size car cabinet and huge screens.

They was a game on the spectrum where you were on a motorbike rushing headlong into a wood or something. Can't remember if the there was anything else in the gameplay. But it was fast, fast, fast and highly addictive.
