a Wavebird was the wireless gamecube controller from nintendo.
It's battery lasted absolutley ages, and is fully compatible with all the VC games on the Wii. I haven't used any gamecube games on mine yet, but with the cube it was a great controller, it did not have rumble though.............
On the top of the Wii (or the left side, if you have it sat horizontally) are two flaps. One with four GameCube controller ports, and the other with two GameCube memory card slots, so yes, the wired controllers work perfectly. It's also where you plug in the receivers for the Wavebirds.
