Hi John thanks for the advice the other day, hope this info works for you.
What about isoproanol alcohol (quite a mild alcohol) I have used it on CD's and LP's before with no ill effects (so far), and if you are worried, you can rinse it off afterwards with tap water then let it dry.
Never used it on DVD's, never had call.

Try an spectacle cleaning cloth. Available from Sunglass Hut and suchlike they have a microfibre type thingy going on and they remove all manner of grease etc from the surface.....

Fariy liquid is as good as anything.
CD's are cleaned in the same way I believe.
    It's also used on vinyl.

Personally, I just use a smidge of water on a damp, lint free cloth. They come up squeaky clean. Any smearing can come off with a cotton bud.

There's a product called Crystal Disc.

I've only actually used it on CDs ( my DVDs are pretty clean :) ) but it cleaned up badly skipping audio CDs that had obvious physical scratches on the disc.

It's not cheap ( about £5 for small tube I think ) but you only need a tiny drop per disc.
