Nintendo have very much been focused on this year and haven't given many details of future plans. Sure, we have seen Indie games that are coming in the first half of next year but Nintendo themselves have been very quiet on the next year.

We know Pokemon and Metroid Prime are coming but they're unlikely to be released in 2018.

What do you think Nintendo will surprise us with for next year? Will we see new IP like we've had this year in Arms? Will we get a revisit of old IP to surprise us? Personally, I would love to see F-Zero, Wave Race, Pilotwings and Advance Wars. I doubt they will keep up their almost one-game-a-month release schedule.

After such a strong start for the Switch, can they keep us entertained next year?

I forgot about Yoshi and Kirby, they're both down for next year.

You can be almost certain that a first quarter release of Smash Bros must be on the cards. I bet they have a number of games in development that they have yet to announce.

Maybe even Super Mario Bros game and a Mario sports title.

Very unlikely but how about more DLC tracks for MK8 that would be wild.

Well, Yoshi and Kirby to start off the year. Metroid, Pokemon and Fire Emblem are on their way but I don't think it's realistic to expect them to come out before 2019. I reckon at least a few of these have a chance of being announced or released next year.

      Animal Crossing
Mario Party / Switch Party (something from NDCube anyway)
      Wii Sports-type game
      Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U port
      Paper Mario Color Splash port
Bayonetta 1&2 port, with a chance number 3 could be on its way
A Zelda port, most likely Skyward Sword or, please God, an HD double-pack of Ocarina and Majora

Plus news on whatever Retro Studios, Monster Games and Next Level Games are bringing to Switch

Switch needs Smash and Pokemon to really continue the momentum developed thus far in 2018.

As much as I'm interested in Fire Emblem, Metroid etc the average consumer whose bought one for Mario is unlikely to have the recognition of these brands, let alone associating them with Nintendo first party. Donkey Kong and Animal Crossing are probably the closest brands Nintendo have in comparison to Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Smash so new entries in those series would be welcomed.

New IP's would certainly be welcomed, but the last thing I want is Nintendo to rush anything and quality to suffer.

Oh, and the VC - whenever that's likely to appear!

There seems to be a lot of rumours that GTA5 and Fallout 4 are coming next year.

I'd imagine Fallout should be do-able its runs on the same engine as Skyrim doesn't it? Its not one of the most graphically demanding games, I wouldn't mind a Fallout 3 / New Vegas Remaster... another good one for playing on the move!

GTA5 while I think would be a great technical achievement but I guess we would be getting the PS3/XB360 version of the game and I'm not sure I could go back to that after the PS4 version!!!

If it looked like the ps3 version in handheld I'd be well happy. It looks great on the ps3.

Skyrim and LA Noir seem to be closer to PS4 then PS3. I haven't played any of these so even if they looked like PS3 in handheld i would be fine with that.

Rest assured Nintendo have everything in hand. Just look how they have played this Switch launch and timing of game releases. We have had a stream of excellent games with more to come.
Now that third parties are having to rethink their strategy, the future is all very rosy for the Switch.

The way Nintendo have been so far reminds me of the Nintendo of old. I think this change is what was needed and the direction they are going in is positive.

After Hiroshi Yamuchi this is the leadership Nintendo needed imo. I hope I don't offend anyone and it's not personal as I have a lot respect for the man (may he rest in peace) but I don't think Satoru Iwata would have done this had he been alive, it's taken new management, an aggressive approach to getting third parties onboard and an overall change in attitude for Nintendo for the switch to be a success. Despite being at the helm for the wii I just don't see Mr Iwata making these kind of decisions, I may be wrong and it's all speculative now but I hope Nintendo capitalise on the position they are in and make the successor to the switch even better.

The switch has smashed it this year. Its genuinely on its way to becoming my 2nd favourite Nintendo device after the snes. It's revitalised my gaming some what and kept my spirits high when I've been dealing with anxiety.

The output for 2018 looks good.

Most of the Switch strategy is Mr Iwata's planning....

Of course as he was the president but to what extent things were changed/stayed the same we won't know but an aggressive strategy to get third parties on board doesn't ring of his leadership to me but as I said I may be wrong. the whole change in direction from wii/wii u times to now this doesn't seem to be consistent. Anyway didn't mean to offend.

I do feel that Iwata was way too nice of a guy, to be as tactile and hard hitting as Nintendo have been this year. It probably helps though that the Wii U tanked and that Nintendo spent the last two years with many projects begging migrated to the Switch.

With non traditional IPs slated for next year I hope we get some old favourites we haven't seen for a while.

      You’re not offending anyone ;)
I just believe you to be wrong. Switch, the concept, was always part of the plan
As Miyamoto said the WiiU had to happen in order to get to the Switch.

My opinion is that Nintendo learnt a lot from the WiiU mistake. And it is showing. BUT it is the concept that is the main success, leading to sales, encouraging third parties to rethink and come on board.

I put a lot of the credit in Iwata’s direction

I think we've got very different opinions on this one :)

Yes the switch was going to happen and as a concept it was created under Iwata's supervision. For me though it's the execution that's led to its success and how much of that was in the original 'plan' we'll never know but as @zantarous said I believe Mr Iwata was a nice guy and the more mature image of the switch is something I don't think would have been created under his management.

Nintendo are never going to admit that the Wii u was a failure/mistake of course they are going to put a positive pr spin on it and say the wii u was necessary for the switch, I don't believe that for a second.

Games are always scaleable and can be made for various platforms but working alongside third parties and making these games happen like Doom, Skyrim, LA Noire etc... yes third parties have seen the success of the switch but the same was true with the wii but short of throwaway titles and shovel ware there was few proper third party games out for it.

Nintendo have been more aggressive this time round actively making sure that they collaborate with third party devs and make these games happen and I just don't think this is a direction Mr Iwata would have taken. Yes as a concept and as a creation Mr Iwata takes the credit but ultimately for me it's the execution and subsequent games coming out that have made the console a success.

Its also nice to see that more "adult" games that wouldn't have been seen on any of the "3d" era consoles (N64 on) like LA Noire and Skyrim are appearing, with rumours about "proper" GTA coming as well, that starts to convince those folk who have always seen the Nintendo machines of the last decade as for "kids"

I'm not interested in ports of games I finished years ago on the Xbox 360, nor am I ask that interested in seeing every old Nintendo franchise resurrected. Metroid of course, that's a no brainier, and Fire Emblem, but Arms showed that Nintendo is perfectly capable of creating entirely new things. So more of that please, I want to be surprised.

I'd also like to see third parties bringing their A game to the Switch. Mario vs Rabbids was excellent for example. Essentially I want high quality games written specifically the platform. No more ports with dodgy frame rates and sub par visuals.

The only worry is that Nintendo used their two biggest franchises and their three best teams this year to give the Switch an amazing first 6 months. We'll be on the B teams for next year. Don't expect another mainline Zelda or Mario for many years.

I've got a VITA with 50 games in backlog.

Absolutely no point buying a switch then is there.

I'd love a switch, just to have a new toy, but there's just no point with such a massive (for me) backlog on the VITA. That backlogs going to keep me going 5 years.
