    Hi,

I am curious to know what tag were working on before being bought out by IAG, new product lines or even a new direction for the company itself.

Youre right.Theres not much point thinking about what could have been. We'll just have to wait and see what IAG have to offer.

Yes it is the past ;)

But if TMA were working on development of a new product maybe IAG will put it into production

Lets be fair you could imagine Udo,Steve,John etc in their monthly meeting discussing the future :smashin:

But can you really see iag bringing anything to market that hasn't been done before.

I think releasing all those old Audiolab amp's etc in the New Audiolab clothes speaks for itself

I'm not knocking them just being realistic

I saw a prototype of the F1 amp when up at the old HQ and it was fantastic looking! Also saw various other prototypes from the early days like the Cleopatra and CD player/stereo amps that never saw the light of day.... And an interesting two-tone pair of F1 speakers.....
Does anyone know what happened to these prototypes? Have they found their way home with one of the ex-employees? Or are they still in a display case somewhere?

One F1 amp was dismatled, might have been rebuilt. The F1 speakers were mostly repainted to forfill existing orders.

The Clopatra was just a model (along with all the early type prototypes). These were skipped.

Hi, If I remember the hazy days of the VIP Evening, the models you've found a photo of were in a glass cabinet back near the offices/meeting room and were labelled High end CD/Preamp/Power amp prototypes.

The Cleopatra was quite a different beast....
It was tall, and was almost cubic in size/shape compared to the flat (traditional shaped) case of the Aphrodite, although it's functions were the same. It had a top loading CD drive and the controls were on the front, angled face. The pictures of it I saw made me imagine it to be more like an 80's vision of the future, rather than a true groundbreaker! But that might be more to do with it being a prototype!

I find it very interesting that in many publicity photographs the amp, preamp and DVD players are shown stacked on top of each other.

    Has anyone ever done this?

As far as I can it is NEVER recommended to stack units on top of each other.

Is there a reason - heat, stray radiation - anyone know?

I didn't take my camera to the VIP night, but I know others did, so maybe there needs to be an appeal to attendees (and Udo and the team) to upload their photos for nostalgia's sake...... There were a few on the TMA website soon afterwards, so maybe they can be revealed again....

My DVD32R and AV32R are stacked. There is an extra Tag foot to increase the height but work fine like that.

The picture is of the F1 DVD and an early F1 power amplifer. We also had a model of an F1 AV processor, but that vanished at some point.

All the prototype models when down to McLaren International for storage, in a sort of end of "Indiana Jones" film type way.

I think the McLaren coloured F1 loudspeakers also ended up at McLaren, they were nowhere near production spec, so could not be sold.

The second picture, of the VSM2048 standalone unit got my hopes up, as on the night I was hoping that it would be a way of processing video without a AV192....

Was the scaler vsm 2048 ever into production, or only a couple of prototypes were made?

The VSM2048 standalone scaler was only a prototype. The costs for finish are to high, that made the standalone scaler uninteresting for the market. It`s easy to reconstruct this way very simply. You need for the standalone version:

    VSM2048 Scalercard € 8499,--
    PSM192 DeInterlaceingcard € 1899,--
    HDTV Inputboard € 999,--
    PSM/VSM Interface € 949,--
    RGB Switcher € 849,--
= € 13195,-- (without a case, microcontroller system and many other little things to let it run)

So the price must be set at (very careful) at € 15.000,--

In relation the Vigatec S1 (with full digital HDTV Support) costs €12500,--

Another part is, IAG cant build this type of multilayer plate – there are from time to time some AV192R full loaded on used market – catch one if you can – The VSM 2048 is one of the greatest scaler in the world. :D

and what chip did they use for scaling again, and what makes that the 'best in the world'?

    Hi Nic,

The scaling chip is a simple Genesis one. You can find this type in many other products (cheep an expensive) – The programming an architecture around the chip do the results. The scaling chip alone has no idea about….! The AV192R is build with many solutions inside - for example: every video card has a different color in / output level – that makes errors – TAG compensate this with a internal adjustment for RGB offset and gain. A little thing of course, but hundreds of this little things set it to “one of the greatest scaler in the world”.

So, the ideas of the TAG Team are the time far ahead – it would take a lot of time for other products to come close to it.

    Mike
