My 2 most scary games are both Thief and Thief the Deadly Shadows.

In Thief the first time the scariest his you is out of the blue and Zone told me of a very funny incident what happened in his house.

The scariest level in the game is The Haunted Cathedral where you hear all manner of noises and you are literally frightened to open a door for what may be on the other side. I use to be classed as the most scariest level of any game up to last year.

Thief the Deadly Shadows. Is also scary and many sight The Cradle as the worst, but for me it was the following one The Lair Of The Hag with the stone statues giving me chase didn’t half get my heart going.

Scarabeus on the C64 was pretty scary. The heartbeat style music was incredibly atmospheric.

Thief 3, being chased by a zombie. What made it so much tense/scary than anything before, was the fact you couldnt just turnaround and 'blast' the foe. Also the asylum in the same game - a sort of 'did i see something move or didnt i' effect  :smashin:

I rermber playing Resident Evil (1 i think ??) very late one night when I was at university many years ago, with a friend watching, the room was suitably dark and at the time the graphics were pretty far out. I was walking round the Police Station when a licker dropped from the ceiling.

Neither of us knew very much about the game and had never seen one of these beasts before so lets just say that a little bear was spilt and we both went out seperate ways to the nearest toilet !!!!!

Seems a little tame now though. :boring:

AvP 2. Yes, as the marine at the begining and once the Aliens actually start coming for you! I emptied all my rounds into walls as I panicked and ran from the beasts only to watch them slay me from behind. Game over man!

More recently. Early levels of Doom 3.
After a while it wears off as it gets repetetive and boring!

    Oh, and ehem...css... ehem.
Sometimes, Just sometimes, if you are camping and looking in one direction then suddenly somone comes at you from behind and shoots you, that really makes me jump as it comes through my surround speakers and its VERY loud!

Eye of the Beholder I & II and Hired Guns on the Amiga used to scare me - though admittedly I was lot more scare-able back in those days.

I think the time I got scared the most really is the first time playing Eternal Darkness: sanity's requiem.

It was dark, I was glued to the tv and walking towards a door. I was running the game through my surround system at the time and the door suddenly started banging (very loudly as I had the sound up quite high) And I almost s**t myself (no literely)

Bit silly really but that was scarey.

Probally other than that the list would have to be

resident evil 3 first meeting nemisis
that bleedin' baulder on tombraider 3
a couple of bits in extermination
and the whole of project zero / 2 are probally the worst to date

Mine has got to be Alien on the C64. You had to move you men around a 2D map, all very quite when eventualy a picture of the Alien Flashed up on the screen with an alarm going!

The bit where the dog breaks through the window in Resident Evil takes it for me, nearly gave me a heart attack!

The "body in the bath" moment in Eternal Darkness really made me jump out of my skin.

In a completely different way, the part in HL2 where you're walking across the underside of the railway bridge turned me into a jibbering wreck, because I suffer from serious vertigo, and the sense of height above the ground was so brilliantly done.

One bit in The Suffering really got to me.

I checked one of the security monitors to see if anything was up ahead. While flicking through the screens you find one camera that shows you, looking at the screens.

With a monster creeping up behind you!

But when you turn around, there is nothing there.

I haven't played the game since. That's because I'm too tied up with new games like HOI2 of course..... I'm not scared. Honest.

Like others playing human in AVP2. That damn sensor has a lot to answer for :)
I actually stopped playing this game coz it was that scary.....what a wuss.

The shark lvl in Res 1 was exciteingly scary and tense , as well as other parts from that game too. It was the first video game i remember being scared playing , a good job by the developers.

half life 2 made me jump out of my skin a couple of time, not exactly scared but shocked. the bit where you first encounter the jumpin zombies i turned arround and there was one about an inch from my face!

another more shock that scary is in counter strike, you know your the only player on your team left against several enemies, walking and crouching not to make a sound then BANG! an ak starts shooting very very loud you nearly have a heart attack and die, or is that just me?

AVP/AVP2 as the marines is scary and can really make you jump.

An old PC game called Realms Of The Haunting was pretty creepy as you wandered round an old house and could hear a woman crying. Creeped me out

System Shock 2 was certainly pretty nerve-racking. It made very good use of sound, so you could often hear that there was a monster out there somewhere a long time before you actually ran into it. Some of the dialogue was pleasantly creepy too: "The Many sings to us...."

The original System Shock was a better game, though (for its time).

God you have a good memory Garrett I'll have to remember to be careful what I tell you in future ;) and the "incident" in the mines were most certainly not very funny  :D

For me one of the scariest games I've played has to be the original Resident Evil, the first time you meet a zombie then panic  as its chewing on your neck, or the first time I ran away from one (do a lot of that me :rotfl: ) after running out of ammo, and it opened a closed door to resume the pursuit

God help me and I'm sat waiting for Play to post out Resi 4 :suicide:

Eek! Don't say that, it's like a red rag to a bull where Laurel & Hardy is concerned. I was extremely surprised when I saw that he'd not already posted about how scary Doom 3 is on here. :smashin:

I did think that Doom3 was pretty scary though to be fair. Whilst it's not the best game in the world it does have some nice bits that make you jump.

Resident Evil 4 was pretty scary in parts and it definately has you panicing with the joypad fighting off those crazy villagers!

Also AVP2 & System shock which have been mentioned were scary games!

I would agree with AvP2 as the marine and System Shock 2 (does anyone know where to get this game, these days?)
The original Alone in the Dark had it's moments, the Zombie under the trap door, that worm underground and some seriously good story (well, I like Lovecraft, so the story appealed to me).Clive Barker's Undying really had me going - the sound was fantastic. Shame no one bought the game, mind. Also in terms of atmosphere, look to the abandoned house level in No One Lives Forever. That level had bags of tension, with windows rattling and such like.
I am playing Resident Evil 4 at the mo, which looks good so far, much better than the other Resi games. Upcoming titles? FEAR and STALKER, both acronyms and both look like winding up the tension.

cold fear, a game only just released on ps2 and xbox is very creepy. you wander around a derelict ship with the rain pounding down around you and the waves crashing onto the deck, loads of dark rooms and gruesome sights, i really enjoyed it for the couple of hours i played it, i will have to remember to start playing it again soon.

3D Monster maze on the ZX81 - I kid you not. When I turned the corner of the maze, only to be confronted by a black and white "Barney", made up of cursors, I nearly shat my pants.

Thank christ the ZX81 didn't have sound effects to match it's cutting edge graphics.

On thinking about it, thank christ it didn't have sound full stop! What with those stunning graphics,I just wouldn't have been able to take the bloody thing "beeping" at me aswell. The toilet was about 25 feet away, with stairs as an added obstacle. Accidents happen, and that one was definately waiting.

I'm amazed no-one on here has mentioned meeting the Flood for the first time in Halo - or was it just me who found being locked in a room with them all suddenly pouring out of the ventilation ducts somewhat alarming?

That and the dog jumping through the window in Resident Evil.

I am sure people would mention Halo, if Halo was actually any good!! Oh Ho!

That was a joke, by the way. No need to reply.

Got to mention Eye Of The Beholder on the Amiga - what a classic game!
I used to play this at night with headphones on and the first time I got to Level 3 (the one with all the spiders on) it really made me jump! I had quite a few all night sessions on this game - a great game on a great machine - those were the days!

Yeah, I forgot about Undying. That had some really creepy moments.

Didn't like that haunted house section in Vampire either
