Just been having a discussion about 'war' films with a friend.
Need some help on the title of a film.

Can't remember the exact details but the story centred around a nuclear attack between the US and Russia and the so called Mutually Assured Destruction.

I think the story went that the US launched an accidental attack for which Russia retliates.

Was on TV several years ago and have not seen or heard anything of it since.

I KNOW I watched it but just cannot remember the name of the film or anyone who was in it.

    Any help??

    By Dawn's Early Light ??

Didn't Robert Urich play one of the American bomber pilots? Can't remember anything much else about it though.

Just had a look at that title on one of the 'movie' sites and that seems to be the film I meant.

Plot is the other way round to what I thought but the rest fits.

    Garrett,

You may be right. The plots look very similar. Oh and it was Powers Boothe not Robert Urich - the memory isn't what it was...

By Dawns' Early Light is a decent film. I have it on video somewhere and was, oddly enough, thinking it would be nice to have on dvd. Ah the good old days of the 80's with bleak outlooks and nuclear destruction just around the corner.
Just noticed it came out in 1990, truly the ending of an era.

In Fail-Safe America gets a false alert, and sends the bombers in, and the are un-able to recall a bomber, and it nuke's Moscow. To prevent all out nuclear was the president allows the Russians to Nuke a American city. This film was in B&W.

By Dawns Early Light a nuclear bomb is set of by terrorist, the bombers are sent in, at one point Rebecca De Morney gets blinded in one eye due to a blast (she is a bomber pilot), there is also a scene were the vice president (in charge)is after all out nuclear war, and is on a jumbo (war room), an other jumbo is on its track with only minute to prevent this all out nuclear war by crashing into it, but with no way of catching it up.
I also have this on video.

Hope this clear up which film you are after.

Well Fail Safe certainly seems to follow the plot that I thought but I thought the film I saw was colour!!
It wasn't the TV remake either because I saw it way before then..

Guess I'll just have to try and get a copy of both....
Thanks for all the help anyway.

    Andrew,

If you saw the film on TV, then you DEFINITELY saw the film "By Dawn's Early Light" on BBC1.

It's the only one of the two films mentioned, that's been on TV, and the BBC has shown this title several times over the years. They may even still hold the rights to repeat it.

And the more I read the posts the more I remember the film - the bit about the pilot being blinded I am sure I remember.

I think I may have just got the two plots intertwined hence my confusion!

Will have to track down a copy from somewhere.

Fail-Safe has been on TV, but late at night/early morning. An other pointer to By Dawns early Light, the president’s plane he is on is brought down, and the gung ho vice president takes over.
Also watch out for, but your film mustn’t be this surely, is Dr Strangelove.
