I am looking at buying either the Denon 2900 or maybe an Arcam DVD player, can someone tell me what speed the Video DAC is on the Arcam.

I know the Denon has a 12 bit 108Mhz DAC, the higher the numbers the better the picture.

I would assume the Arcam either has a 12 bit or maybe a 14 bit video DAC.

I have looked on their site, but thats pretty useless.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the numbers, if I were you.

The video DACs in the 88Plus are the internal ones in the Vaddis 5. These are 10 bit, 54 MHz sampling and are also excellent in terms of linearity and noise. Given that the video from the DVD is 8 bit resolution and that the Vaddis 5's internal processing is at 12 bit level, you would gain very little by using an external video DAC. The picture quality will be at least as dependent on the MPEG processor (and Zoran's is one of the best) and on the quality of the analogue reconstruction filters, output buffer amplifiers and power supplies.

There is just the same specmanship here, especially amongst Far Eastern suppliers, as there used to be in audio DACs in CD players. There is a lot more to getting best quality than that!

These more modern 'higher spec' DACs don't necessarily give a better picture, use your eyes

    Captain

sorry it wasn't meant to come out quite how it lookedin the end, I was in a rush

The best interlace DVD signal I have seen is from a Tag as if you look at the specs they really don't look very impressive at all against the modern numbers. I also ask these same questions but there is a big difference between the video DACs and it isn't allied to the numbers game.

Don't forget DVD is 8 bit! And just about everyone is recovering all the information nowdays
