    Got thinking to myself that bearing in mind I live in the UK/Ireland (St Albans...Near London) I have actually not seen many of the amazing things that this country has to offer which are right in my back yard...so to speak of!

    For instance;
    Hadrians Wall
    Stonehenge
    Blackpool Tower
    10 Downing Street
    Giant's Causeway

    I have not been to any of these :(

    But I have been to see this lot:
    Gherkin - Worked there
    London Eye
    White cliffs of dover
    Tower of London/Tower Bridge
    Buckingham Palace
    Westminster
    Edinburgh Castle

    Any more you guys can think of?

    And what have you missed or been lucky enough to see?

    Some of the places I've been to include Stone Henge, Blackpool Tower, Tower of London, Downing Street, London Eye, Edinburgh Castle, Windsor Castle, Houses of Parliament, Millennium Dome, and Houses of Parliament.
    Also been to many places like Cheddar Gorge, Ben Nevis, Mount Snowdon, Loch Ness, and the White Cliffs of Dover.
    I do most of my holidaying in the UK so have been all over the place, but still not made it over to Ireland yet, although hope to go there this year.

    Most New Yorkers have never been up the Empire State Building either. :) I think people tend to travel to do the tourist stuff - most of us don't do the things that are on our doorstep. We tend to have a few local-ish places we revist regularly.

    Ahhh yes Loch Ness! want to visit that too!

    And yes the Gherkin is a fancy office block but pretty iconic for the UK/London.

    I have been pretty lucky as work and life have taken me to all corners of the UK - I have at one time or another lived in Scotland, London, Kent, Hampshire, Cumbria, Devon, South Wales, Cheshire and Northumberland. And still own property in several of those so still get to travel around. All in all it has never been too far to get to key landmarks.

    Most recently I walked Hadrians Wall and associated fortifications from South Shields to Ravenglass. Loved every minute and will walk the Antonine Wall this year. Preferrably before IronGiant sticks metal plaques all over it!

    Makes me feel sad that a lot of young people (Thinking about my 5 younger siblings) do not want to travel the UK and see these sites. London is always eventually visited but a lot of great attractions are left unvisited.

    I try to go to at least two new towns\cities a year for a few nights stay and take in all they have to offer. Last year was Bath and Windsor and a week in the lake district staying in White Cross Bay. :)

    Been to a few but I need to see a lot more! It is one of resolutions to visit much more of the UK this year (even if it's just a day trip!).

    Main one this year is to get to the Lake District for a long weekend.

    We too like to take short breaks in the UK, so I've visited most of the places listed. Some highlights:

    • House of Commons/ House of Lords;
    • Buckingham Palace;
    • Stonehenge, when you could walk around it and touch the stones;
    • Downing St, when it was freely open to the public;
    • Portland Bill - watched the 1999 eclipse from there; plus the view from The Heights back along the Chesil Beach;
    • Dolphin watching at Cromarty;
    • View of the Forth Railway Bridge from South Queensferry;
    • Ditto Bamburgh Castle from Seahouses;
    • Unnamed road from Malham Tarn to Arncliffe, in the Dales;
    • The A838 Lairg to Durness;
    • Corfe & Tintagel Castles: easily the most evocative/romantic of all;
    • Wigan North Western Station when a 'Duchess' Class comes through at full chat with the 'Royal Scot';
    • The pedestrian bridge at Heston Station, Heathrow, under a Concorde take-off.
