we are an apple family, but as much as we want Apple televisions are not out yet, but I need to get a couple of new TVs due to remodelling of the house.

So since I am in the market for a new smart TV, would love to find the one that would allow me EFFORTLESSLY to stream video files from Mac or iPad to this tellie...

anyone out there with a Mac on his lap and a tellie in front?:)

I looked at apple TV before, the way i understand it I need 1 such device for each TV set. Is this not correct?

I would have thought that having a modem, Mac and a latest TV set I can go by without another device in between...

NAS would be a better idea than an Apple TV to address my requirements as I only want to be able to watch videos we already have on Macs. But this, too, involves in-between device, although just 1 for all TVs...

how complicated everything is and how easy this can be resolved by writing a smart code to allow a SMART TV to be a monitor for ANY portable computer...

If you're not interested in the Apple TV, you can install PLEX client on your new smart tv (The 2012 samsung and LG models should be able to do this)

You will need a Plex Media Server running on your mac. The plex media server will serve your media contents to all of your Plex clients (Smart Tvs)

Here is a guide on how you can set up your plex media server.
Guide: Setting Up Plex Media Server

    Samsung tv running Plex:
Plex App v0.8.14 for Samsung TV's and...

With Mountain Lion you can stream to airplay devices (eg the Apple tv) so what you're looking for is an AirPlay enabled TV. I don't think there are any on the market at the moment. The easy solution is one Apple Tv per TV set.

It's not quite clear what you want to achieve though. This solution allows you to show any content from any Apple device on any TV but doesn't give you a movie library for instance.

Plex is really the better option here for less work overall and ease of use. iTunes homesharing works great but a lot of work must be done beforehand to prepare all the media in a compatible format and generate the metadata too.

The Plex server auto scans media and auto converts too, the Samsung Plex client in it's TV app store is all you need if buying TV's but you can also use the iOS/OSX clients too.

why wouldn't they support the TVs that are being sold for some months already??? Is this so very different s/w-wise?..

Hands down, perhaps I just want too much from the tech world today. :(
