Yep, The Shield is the greatest. There's been a debate in the Game of Thrones thread about writing and quality etc, and The Shield is the only show I've ever seen that maintained the highest quality for 7 seasons. With the ultimate payoff. The Sopranos was 7 really as well, but I think that dipped in the final season a bit. Breaking Bad was only 5, The West Wing did drop off after Sorkin left, The Wire was only 5 (and the final season of The Wire was the weakest for sure), and most other shows like The Walking Dead are well past their sell by date by Season 7.

Liven it up by taking a drink every time a specific, but randomly chosen, character swears each episode.

Unless you choose Bullock, Saul or Alma Garrett you should be pissed before the episode is halfway through.

If you have access to Prime, may I suggest Patriot. Only 2 seasons so far but probably 1 of the best things out there right now

apart from the oft mentioned monoliths of tv show legend, breaking bad, GOT, sopranos, shield, wire etc have tried to think of(some lesser spotted) shows i have enjoyed

you won't go wrong with many of these, have tried to put the top 5 at the top, rest in no order.
with a little summary after the first ones to answer your why question? - put in spoiler tags just to be ultra cautious, but are just a very brief gist of what they are about :)

    1) Gomorrah (italian) -
real style gritty street mafia / drug / power struggle drama - BEST of it's genre
    2) Love/Hate (irish) -
irish underworld / drug / rivalry gritty drama with some great characters - criminal this isn't on most peoples watch list!
    3) Undercover (2019 - dutch/belgian) -
undercover / informant / drug trade, i like the constant "will they get found out" by the baddies element!
    4) El Chapo - (spanish) -
like a long-form version of narcos but much better, much more in depth, and emotional look at the drug kingpin
    5) Ozark -
sh*t hits the fan for a family man, EVERYTHING spirals out of control

    Generation Kill
    Oz
    Making a murderer
    Better Call Saul
The Killing AKA forbrydelsen (danish original not us remake)
    Banshee
    Lost
    Lilyhammer (US/Norwegian)
What we do in the shadows
    altered carbon
    Borgen (danish)
    Fargo
    Cobra Kai
    Animal Kingdom
    Bloodline
    The Haunting of hill house
    Sons of Anarchy
    The Night of
    Misfits (british)
    Money Heist (spanish)
    The Affair
    Trapped (icelandic)

Yeah this is very good the first few seasons with Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger) but the standout actor for me was Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, who plays Ebony Maw in the recent Avengers movies..

    Sons of Anarchy
Mayans MC - more violent 'sequel' of SoA
The West Wing - the best political drama ever made
Cardinal - it is a police drama but not overly procedural
    The Good Wife

Taboo. Tom Hardy at his finest. It's not streaming anywhere at the moment that I can see, but I expect BBC iPlayer to have it back on at some time soon as they seem to be offering up their boxed sets in rotation.

And Endeavour, to round it off :)

Rectify is another very good one, although probably not to the OP's taste (slow burner).

After a very quick look through this thread I can't say I've seen anybody notice Penny Dreadful, which is probably the best series I've seen in the last decade.

Right I'll dive in even if you have enough to watch for a few years. I've focused on programs that are imho excellent and worth the time investment. No disrespect but I think some people are posting things that are good (and still worth watching if you have the time) rather than great (which is what you want if you don't have the time) which is confusing if nothing else.

13 Reasons Why - First season was beyond superb but strangely never got round to watching the second as I suspect it's a sad cash in. The first stands alone and needs nothing added or removed. Just superb.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Wonderfully dark and a wicked sense of humor. About as far from it's teen focused predecessor as you can imagine.

House MD - Hugh Laurie at his absolute finest. Grumpy, miserable, fragile and funny as anything. "It's Lupus" and "Everyone Lies" became the catchphrases for this. The ending episode is one of the best written I've ever seen.

Chance - Sadly only lasted 2 series but again Hugh Laurie in sublime form and properly finished.

Elementary - Really loved this in a similar way to House (clearly my family likes fragile flawed lead characters!) with some outstanding acting from Lucy Lu (something I didn't think I'd ever be typing) and some great writing.

The Haunting of Hill House - Without doubt one of the most scary TV my wife and I had seen in years. No gore all psychological and a pretty decent backstory. Was compelling viewing.

If you can look past the dated sets/effects then Sapphire and Steel are excellent. I wish they'd remake them with modern technology as theres so much they could do with them. Sadly lasted only 6 episodes (though they varied between 4 and 8 30 min segments per episode) but again excellent what they managed to do with almost no budget.

There's others people have named that I just couldn't get into such as Battlestar Galactica (7 episodes was enough), Altered Carbon (watched it all and it was good rather than great), Breaking Bad (watched the first 6 episodes twice and just can't get any further), X-Files (managed 4 seasons and just got bored of it).
