    Hi All,

I currently own a Pioneer PDP-LX5090 plasma (got it yesterday), a Pioneer Dv-989AVi DVD player, and a PS3.

I was wondering, for SD content, which would be the better device to get to do the upscaling?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

The theoretical answer would be to feed the TV with the source natively in all cases and let the TV do the work.

But really, the answer is - whichever looks best to you.

Thanks LV426, I think the reason I was asking was if perhaps there was knowledge out there, of all of these devices, which had the best scaler.

I tried my Kuro 4280XD with a PS3 and various upscalers and the TV is certainly better at doing the upscaling in my opinion

    Further questions for the experts:

If your DVD player is left on the smallest setting and everything else left to the plasma for upscaling, is all the information on the actual disc being sent to the plasma?

(ie, if it's set at 580 or 720p, will it send the same information to another source?)

    Thanks,
    Neil.

A regular DVD disc contains* either a 576i or 480i signal. And if the player is doing no scaling and no deinterlacing, that is precisely what is sent to the TV.

Typically (but by no means certainly) having the player de-interlace only produces best results - so the player output is 576p or 480p depending on the disc.

    Nothing is "lost".
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
    * over-simplified but sufficient for this purpose.
