    Hi all,
I,ve recently decided to purchase my first standalone DVD player (used PS2 with RGB

fix to watch DVD's up till now). I'm looking to spend up to £200 for a multi-region player.

After much searching forums & head scratching i'd narrowed my search down to 2 players.

The Sony DVP-NS405 and the Toshiba SD220e

Reading reviews the Toshiba seems to win the sony in terms of picture quality /

performance. However reading threads on this forum there seems to be issues with VCD, SVCD

playback and mixed reports on DVD-R compatabilty with the toshiba. The sony however seems

to fair a lot better in terms of VCD playback & DVD-R compatabilty.

Just to make the decision harder I've noticed that both Sony and Toshiba have just

introduced new updated versions of the aforementioned models.

The Sony DVP-NS430 and the Toshiba SD330e

As yet I've been unable to find any reviews of these new players. Could anyone tell

me what new features they offer and if these players have improved on the older versions ?

Does the new Toshiba have improved VCD, SVCD playback and DVD-R compatability?
Has the Sony improved the picture quality?

More importantly what DVD player would you recommend to buy? Open to any suggestions

Any Comments / Suggestion will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

The Tosh SD520SE is now only £170 from Richer Sounds if you use the May issue of What Hi Fi. Can't help with the compatibility issues, but RS do a good returns policy, so buy and try - if it doesn't play everything you want, take uit back for a refund.

Just checked Richer Sounds website, and they have a store nearby. I might just pay them a visit.

    Thanks for your advice

Just double check on the returns policy at Richer Sounds.
I'm sure they'll only exchange goods not refund your money.

Does anyone know if Richer Sounds will price match any price, even internet prices.

Yes they do - I took a print-out of internet prices with me, so that if they phoned one internet shop, and they were out of stock, they could phone another. The price match only works with in-stock items.

They'll beat the price by £10 - it's a price beat, not price match. :)

Would I notice any difference in terms of picture quality between the Tosh 520e and the 220e / 330e as I only have a 28" Sony TV.

One cell: no, I don't think you'd notice the difference on a 28" tv, so almost anything will look good provided it's via rgb or component.
