Good old RS are showing an Alchemist LA-5000 amp. Straight out of nowhere, obviously (with the usual imaginary rrp).

Looks every inch a high-end item too (online anyway !).

She's only £69.95 but not listed as DD/DTS, just pro-logic (w/6-channel input) and no video inputs just four audio. Doesn't sound right to me. Are these online specs in error ?

Is this just some RS-owned subsiduary clearing out a quid's worth of outdated ICs in a snazzy case (again) ? Or is it something a tiny bit better ? I'm not near an RS so can't comment but if anyone else can I'd like to hear an opinion, out of curiosity.

    Cheers,

    Mike.

    Hi flimber
The amp is bog standard pro-logic you connect up on the analogue inputs [6channel inputs] and then use your dvd players onboard decoders dts and dolby 5.1 thats presuming you have a dvd player with 6 channel connections as the amp hasent got coax or optical connections to receive the digital signals.
    gonzo.

Sounds like you may be extrapolating from the site info (?). What I'm after is 'confirmation' of those specs (or lack of). The case does look nice, PH, would a smaller board not fit in (with much work) ?

Think I might get one of these, use it as a pre-amp or summit.

Exactly what I was thinking: nice looking pre-amp. Acc. to the official website the specs at RS are wrong, as I suspected.

A back panel view would be best.

Very little on the net about it.

If you dig around enough, that would certainly appear to be the case.

Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the hardware though.

No you're right, they did. RS are just getting a free ride on that reputation to sell some tat...again (e.g. Cambridge Audio electronics, JPW speakers, Ariston Electronics, Gale speakers, etc etc).

So is that to suggest that this amp has been designed with RS in mind? Thats a bit of a shame because the forseti pre power was something really special

RS bought out Alchemist a little while ago and were stocking this amp at about 200 squid over xmas - I had a listen (cause I remember their old reputation) and was a little disappointed. Head to head against the marantz 4200 it lost out severely - and I don't even like the sound of the marantz. The finish of the la5000 is a bit Monet aswell.

I think they were intending to trade on the alchemist reputation - but not enough people 'not in the know' have heard of them.

im looking at making a start on a home cinema setup but my funds are extremely limited, my dvd player has the right audio outs to pair up with this amp for dts sound.

is this amp so bad that its totally worthless, or for £70 would it make an ok "my first av amp" bearing in mind ive never owned any quality hifi stuff before so im certainly not particularly fussy atm.

    WILD9 ...

I havn't heard the amp so this is supposition ...

If you DVD player has a 6channel output, then this amp will provide you with the control and amplification you need. Added with a £80 speaker package and you will have a full surround sound system for £150.

The quality won't match more expensive amps, but if you already have the DVD player I don't think you can really go far wrong for £70 (plus speakers).

Oh and unlike some budget amps it doesn't look like a brick **** house.

my thoughts to the letter really , i was hoping someone who has tried it could reply to verify that this amp , whilst not particularly good is also not mind numbingly awfull.

When I auditioned it (with/for my little brother) it sounded pretty much as i expected from a £200 amp. The marantz was selling at the same time for the same money and was much better. However, I'd be tempted to go for it at £70 as it's certainly lsitenable. RS have probably got one set up in their local listening room so no harm in having a listen and seeing what you think. It's no arcam (my personal preference) but it does look better than alot of the more expensive kit. Have a listen. If you like it - buy it. If you don't - walk away. Nothing lost either way

Haven't tried it in 6 channel mode yet, but running it in in stereo mode it sounds ok. Hope the input jpeg is of some use.

So when using the 6-channel input does it just function as a power amp?

it appears to be just an amp, I'll give it a whirl in 6 channel mode tonight if I can be bothered to dewire my Pioneer receiver.
    This is whats inside.

Not with ten output transistors on that heatsink. Might be a push-pull config for the five channels.
