I have a Asus A8N SLI motherboard inside a Accent HT400 pc case, The asus "pc probe " software shows a temp of around 41 for the CPU and 40 for the motherboard - is this ok ? i dont have any idea what it should run at ?

Should be ok, my cpu and mobo run at around 35c with cool and quiet and with this the fan runs at around 900rpm which is nothing! So a couple degree more should be fine. If you are worried, some bios settings let you set an alarm if it goes too high.

My CPU runs at 50c. I leave it on for weeks and game for hours wit no problems.

The temp sensors on your mobo do not give an accurate reading anyway and they differ from mfr to mfr or even two identical mobos can read temps differently due to slight differences in the sensor placement.
