I have a 5.0 set up currently and they are Focal Aria that have flax drivers I was looking at this 1000f by focal at first but that goes to 22hz so it went with my system but a few people have said thats a bad idea limiting yourself just to match the brand your speakers are and Id be best going with something better another brand of sub. But my budget really is £1000 and Id like something to go as low as 16-19hz the lower the better but the question is what is there for my budget? Ive looked at SVS SB2000 19-220 hz ±3 DB. I have never had a sub so I don't really know I just want the best I can get with the budget I have.

All depends on your listening habits and how big you room is

I didnt think room size mattered too much with subs. I thought the lower the frequency the more base the better but its only a small room

As you've never been "exposed" to living with (proper Bass ;)) Subwoofers I'd suggest you first head off to your nearest Richer Sounds and book an audition to listen to a variety of your favorite music CD's and Movie Blurays (take them with you) - start small and work up and see if you can fuid a sweat point in terms of performance vs price - FWIW depending on your listening habits/music/movie choices

TBH I'd be VERY (as in VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY) surprised if a fairly "basic" 200 Watts Sub from someone like BK didn't blow your mind....

"prepare to be amazed" then - once your AV AMP is setup properly regarding crossover frequencies etc. I'd bet my own money even (and I'm Scottish!!!!!!) that something like a BK XLS200 or (even better) XLS400 will blow your mind - but as I've said go to a Hifi Dealer and audition subs in the 200-400 Watt range - and after all your room isn't actually very big...

LOL - "popular misconception" - part of the "Subwoofer Process" actually involves setting your front speakers to "small" in the AV Amp - and letting the Sub handle all the Low Freq. stuff - added benefit is that the Fronts are "freed up"v to handle only the higher frequencies

That makes sense. nice to know! I know my hifi but when it comes to video i dont really have a clue lol, I thought they would still use all the frequencies in the main front speakers

You Can - but it will put more stress on the fronts if you keep them servicing all frequencies

      XTZ 12.17 Subwoofer

The XTZ 17.12 will go below 20hz and at £600 is well below budget, there is not much out there to touch it at it's price.

You must be really new to this that’s fine we all have to learn if you are adding a sub for best performance all speakers in the av should be set to small even big speakers like floorstanders and the crossover should be set to 80hrz to let the sub do all the work or you will get this really messy sound when bass kicks in hope this helps you out a little

Because Bass (LFE) Output isn't stereo/dual-channel so both your sub outputs on the amp will be outputting the same signal so on .1 amps you just use a cheap Y-splitter cable and run to sub cables off that....

Be aware that having 2 subs does not give you more bass as you would expect only get 2 subs if you have dead spots to fill in the bass in certain areas as bass or life outputs the same signal at the same volume if both subs are the same so if you can get great coverage then you only require 1 and when it come to place if it you will look like an idiot btw

the beat way I have found to placing or finding the right spot for your sub is the bass crawl lol

This is where you place the sub where you sit in your chair disconnect all other speakers and play a bass heavy track then crawl around your room on all fours till you find where the bass sounds the best for you and then put the sub there

It’s not as simple as unpack and place where you think it looks best more so as you have put a lot of dish in it already

1 correctly placed sub can fill the whole room my room is about the same in size as yours and have no need for a second I have tried adding a second but made no improvements at all so just sent it back

Ive thought about not putting it on the floor but making a large shelf instead, Ive read it might be better not on the floor, but I guess like you it needs experimenting with once I get one

Mine is nothing fancy I have kef cube 2 mixed with kef q500 q200c and q100
When I upgraded my speakers to the q range a couple years back I had nn to upgrade my sub as it still did what I needed it to plus I like sealed box designs ie no bass port hole they are easier to place and not as fussy
