Hi, getting my new 40" Samsung LCd tomorrow and need to get a pair of speakers to go either side of the tv unit. Can anyone recommend which ones to get up to £100. cheers.

Not listened to them myself but at that sort of price thats probably about as good as your going to get. MS is a reputable manufacturer and you could easily find a richer sounds store to listen to them if you wanted first.

Thx, do you know if speakers such as these can be plugged directly into the tv or will they need some sort of amp.

This all depends on what outputs your tv has. Just have a quick look round the back and if your tv has standard speaker cable outputs then they will work fine. Most modern tv's though dont bother with these anymore, unless your screen comes without its own speakers as standard. If this is the case then you'll need an amp to power them, in which case youl'd be better of buying a cheap stereo and connecting that to your tv.

The Mordaunt Short 902i has a minimum power rating of 15watts.

http://www.mordauntshort.com/specifications.php?PID=47&Title=Specifications

Frequency response (Hz) ... 55-22k
Sensitivity ... ... ... ... ... ... 89db
Nominal impedance ... ... ... 4-8Ω
Power rating ... ... ... ... 15-100watts

That means it is unlikely that your TV will be able to drive them directly. But it means that virtually any external amp will be able to drive them.

Also, you said £100, but you didn't say whether that was Each or a Pair. For now I think we are assuming it means a pair.

Mordaunt Short have generally positive reviews, and those here who have them seem to really like them.

Other speakers with generally positive reviews -

Wharfedale Diamond 9 ( £89/pair)

Power handling (watts):... 15 - 75w
Sensitivity (dB): ... 86
Nominal impedance (ohms): ... 6
Magnetically shielded? ... Yes
W x H x D (mm): ... 145 x 236 x 165
Frequency response (Hz): ... 60 - 24,000

Warfedale Diamond 9.1 ( £129/pair)
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/2197

Power handling (watts): ... 20 - 100 (programme)
Sensitivity (dB): ... 86
Nominal impedance (ohms): ... 6
Magnetically shielded? Yes
W x H x D (mm): ... 194 x 296 x 278
Frequency response (Hz): ... 50 - 24,000

Q Acoustic 1010 ( £89/pair)
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/2842

Recommended amp power (watts): ... 25 - 75
Sensitivity (dB): ... 88
Nominal impedance (ohms): ... 6
Magnetically shielded? ... Yes
W x H x D (mm): ... 175 x 250 x 265
Frequency response (Hz): ... 65 - 20,000

Keep in mind that I'm only mentioning these because they seem to have good consumer reviews, I've not tested them personally.

The Mordaunt Shorts on the other hand, as near as I am able to determine, are £99/each. But again, I've never heard anything against them. Those here who have them seem to really like them.

That's one thing that has alway irked me, sites not making it clear whether the stated price is Each or a Pair.

If you are looking for speakers to connect directly to you TV, then you need to find ported/bass_reflex speakers that don't have a minimum power rating.

Don't know if the helps, but there it is.
