Films such as BUTCH CASSIDY, REAR WINDOW and WITHNAIL AND I all have dolby digital soundtracks, all be it only using eaither 2CH or 1ch MONO sound.

Which sound mode should the amp be in to listen to these ?

On a title such as Butch Cassidy, the amp lights up that sound is present on left an right front speakers so I have chosen stereo, but is this correct ? should I just leave it in dolby/5.1 mode and listen like that

It may vary with different amp manufacturers, but on Denons you would normally listen in ProLogic mode.

Mono encoded in Dolby Digital can either be 1.0 or 2.0. There are technical reasons behind the decision, but when playing ProLogic both of them should end up coming out of the centre speaker only. This is *usually* the best option, but it will depend very much on your own system. Playing them in Stereo mode will produce the same sound from both of your main left/right speakers. This may produce a more pleasing result than routing only through the centre - it's really up to you.

Personally listen to them in ProLogic with the mono sound coming from centre. I just prefer it that way. It seems more 'anchored' to the picture.

I always have my amp in DPL mode for AV sources, i.e. TV (SAT) and VCR. It's set to auto-mode so when DD/DTS 5.1 is available it will activate, but 1.0/2.0 will remain in DPL.<br />Not so good for music (MTV/Channel V) but will do for most TV programmes (some of which are actually in DPL) and the few non-5.1 DVDs I have.
