I use Exact Audio Copy to extract to WAV and, then, Monkey's Audio as a front end to LAME 3.92 to encode to MP3. All free and all 100% effective.

Exact Audio Copy and LAME (both are free). Configured with the help of this guide.

I've used CDEx to fill up my 20GB ipod really well - it even looks up track names in the free cddb....

I dont know why everyone uses mp3 - I think that wma variable sounds much better - especially in the high end. Just my opinion though.

I use MP3 for my car - the head unit does not support WMA. Besides, I will choose public domain or open source over Micro$oft proprietary (sp?) anytime. Finally, although I do not condone copyright infringement, DRM is something that will inconvenience me as an honest user. I will not tie myself into something which enforces DRM.

For high end I generally use the CDs in my CD player but, on my PC, I use Monkey's Audio and winamp2 to play the APE files back. Half the size of WAV and guaranteed lossless (and reversible, so great for archiving.)

    Now you know. ;)

DRM is only an issue if you tick the box that enables it. Media player 9 also has a lossless codec which sounds great. When I said the high end I meant that one of the results of mp3 compression is that the bass end is exagerated and the hi end(treble hi hats etc) is distorted.
