I baught a Sanyo Z3 last week (an upgrade from an AE100)
I am pleased with it. I have not seen the Sony, but only you can decide whether the extra 500 pounds is worth it. Remember that you get a 3 year warranty with the Sanyo.
IMO All LCD projectors have limitations. The blacks on the Z3 are no where near I would like, BUT if you are using it for games then the HiRes of LCD projectors is what to go for.
I think you will be pleased with either if you have not owned a projector before.
Plus points for the Sanyo -
Noise. This is a very quite projector.
User Servicability (means to clean panels)
    Warranty
    Resolution
    Colours - very realistic.
Anybody care comment on the Sony.

Could you tell us a little bit more about your requirements? Do you have control of ambient light and will you be using a screen or wall? The more information you can provide, the easier it is to help.

I'd agree with Azzo - the Z3 looks very good. If you calibrate it and can turn the lights off, the picture improves no end - I certainly haven't been disappointed with black levels/shadow detail.
