Should get my new PS2 any day now. WooHoo! Been waiting for the price to drop.

Anyhow, as I've never played any games on the PS2 before, I reckon I'll go and pick up a few pre-owned ones from Game or such like.

What recommendations would you give to a newbie like me?

for a good kill everything in sight Devil May Cry 1 & 2
Burnout 2 is good also Grand theft auto 3 & Vice city (is a must)
Manhunt I like this even though its had bad press
for football Pro evo is the daddy with out any doubt
there is a world of games out there for this machine so what eve floats ya boat
but I would recomend reading the write ups on the games b4 buying them to see if its any good
Half life & red faction is good aswell my m8 raves on about socom 1 & 2
sonic is a good laugh on ps2 worth a look

Don't even think about buying red faction. Its pants.

Apart from that, I second Typhoon's recommendations. I'd also recommend Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear 2, Wipeout Fusion, Final Fantasy 10 and soul caliber 2.

There are many other excellent games, but these are the must-own titles IMO.

Ico is a must own if you can find it, one of the finest games ever made IMO, on any platform.
Also I'd recommend Colin McRae3 (haven't played 4), and of course GTA vice city
They should tide you over for a while!

Thanks guys. ParcelForce tried delivering it yesterday, but my wife wasn't in  Anyway, getting it delivered to work today instead, so off to Game at lunchtime to pick up some of the above suggestions.

Just have to get kids in bed nice and early, so I can spend a few hours playing

I'll be amazed if you can pick up ICO for less than £25!

Dunno about SOCOM and BG&E. Above average, but not classics.

I did say most, however I picked up ICO in gamestation about a year ago for £15! Socom 2 is an essential purchase if looking to go online, great game. BG&E is a fantastic adventure game, sold poorly but it's a superb story and plays well. Can be bought for next to nothing now, infact it only cost me around £15-£20 at release!

I think the main problem with BG&E is that the replay value is so low. An amazing adventure the first time round, but nothing has made me want to play it again, after completing it (bit like MGS2, in that respect).

I was in Gamestation last month and was flipping through the game racks looking for nothing in particular untill i flipped a game forward to reveal ICO and i swear to god (in true movie style) there was a single ceiling spotlight lighting it up from the rest of them, the holy grail, ok the box didn't have the cardboard sleeve or the postcards, but it was only £15, everyone who was working behind the counter gave me the same knowing look. I've only had time to do the first cage bit, but i can see it being a great adventure!!

If you go on Ebay they regularly go for £25 - £30

Sorry guys, should have checked for similar Q before posting.

Anyway Rob, glad to hear Vice City is good as I have bought my first two games.
Vice City and Gran Tourismo 3.

Only trouble is my wife and kids want me to go over and stay with them at in-laws for the night. Don't they realise the importance of playing these games?

True, but for me that's the same for all adventure style games. Once you've done the game you've seen it all (unless it's non linear) and I guess the only thing that would get me to replay the game would be if it contained some truely memorable & outstanding sections. Then if that was the case i'd probably just keep some saved games of those sections so I could skip to them.
