I've been given the go ahead for a movie room. I'm designing it as I like, so it will be light controlled (dark walls and ceiling) and I'm going to be putting in a fixed screen. I'm after suggestions on what I should get for a screen material? I'm more than happy to to fit and build a frame myself.

Is this to be a dedicated room? If so Filmex material for an acoustic screen and Devore everywhere else.

Yes it's dedicated. I've everything sorted apart from the screen - doesn't need to be acoustic though, speakers are under and either side.

Ear height? If not, would putting them behind the screen help them get to ear height?

If you are going to place the speakers behind the screen then a transparent screen is a must, Gain wise, you'll ideally be looking at a gain from 1 - 1.4 Gain.

We have a number of fixed screens which are transparent

Another one I would look at is whether you wish to add a 2.35:1 screen and use a projector with memory zoom. This will help you create a real cinema experience compared to a standard 16/9 screen. You'll have to work out your distances though, the smallest zoom will have to fit the viewable height of the screen 2.35:1 and the viewable width for the longest zoom. Lens shift is also critical enabling you to alter the lens height for differing screen heights.

To check out a few 2.35:1 screens view our link below

Thanks Shane, I'm thinking of going down the line of a 2:35 to 1 ratio screen. My 9300 does have lens memory on it so it certainly is doable with CIH if I'm happy to have black bars at the left and right of the screen on 16:9 content (of which I don't have that much). I'm aiming to get it mounted this weekend so I can see size etc. I've done it on paper but until I'm in a seating position and see something in reality!!! There is always the possibility moving forwards of adding some form automated side masking triggered by the remote control when I change the lens position.

As said before though, I don't need anything acoustically transparent

The Epson will be fine for CIH. Every time I’ve ever seen someone viewing a 2.35:1 screen showing a 16/9 movie, the height is always the winner, then when a movie with 2.35:1 is played and the image grows in width, it’s a fantastic experience and one that makes you feel your at the pictures

Just remember about the subtitles when view 2.35:1, some players let you move them, others do not

    Enjoy

Can still use Flimex. It's cheap, easy to work with and gives great results.

PSM screens mate. ProWhite projector screen material - PSM Screens - Projector Screen Material UK

I’ve tried loads, this is the best for the money, compares to much more expensive materials.

The other one that gives great results is Harkness Screens. They are a commercial grade supplier, have used it in the past, again, very good.

Check out my build thread for an idea on adjustable masking. If you’re building a diy screen is strongly recommend doing something similar.

New outbuilding dedicated cinema room - finished
