I am getting a new receiver and DVD combo and it seems like its tough choice between my shortlist of the Rotel RSX-1067 OR ARCAM AVR-300 (I also looked at the Denon, Yamaha and NAD).

    Can anyone help ??

I have also been looking at both of these receivers and have decided that the extra cost over the avr-300 is better spent on a better dvd player, so my choice would be the arcam avr-300 teamed with the arcam dv79 player.

I have heard the avr-300 on my quad speakers and it blew me away!

    Hope that helps :)

Which Quads have you got? Must be an awesome combo!

I'd personally go for the Arcam

Cool - i preferred the Arcam because of the DVD dv-79 player

Now to decide on the speakers. I wanted something that wasnt too imposing on the living room. I currently have some Bose Lifestyle speakers but i have found these arent too good - lacking depth.

I wonder if the Mordaunt Short Genie would be better (which to me sounded like a huge improvement over my Bose) ... or will i find the same problem as the Bose ... (just not enough range out of the speaker compared to a bigger box).

    Any ideas ?

Are you looking for a sub/sat system or floorstanders and what is your budget?

The Castle compacts are great satellites for around £1k

I was thinking around GBP1k but i have a flexible budget.

I was thinking of a sub / sat system but could be convinced otherwise ... i have been really disappointed with my Bose speakers

I have seen the Monitor Audio Radius speakers that look good. I guess you could use R90's for the rear and R270s for the front. R180's probably for the centre. Havent heard these yet though.

I will add the Castle to the shortlist.

    So far I have

    Castle Compact
    The Monitor Audio Radius
    Mordaunt Short Genie

Out of those, I think the Castle would be clear winners. But go for a demo and see for yourself! :smashin:

Tejstar, have you heard the MA Radius ? MY problem is that the hifi shops near me only have one of these brands ... hard to do a side-by-side comparison

I think the Genie is definately off the list. Its a nice compact satelite speaker but while its very good am concerned it will end up being disappointing in a bigger room ( and I alraedy have the Bose speakers) which I am upgrading.

I demmed the Arcam with the Genies last weekend. OK with the movies, but really quite poor with music. I think the AVR300 probably deserves some better speakers to be honest.

I ended up buying the Denon 3910/3805 with some Quad 11L fronts and Quad 11C Centre, Radius 90 rears and a MJ Ref 100 sub. A bit of a mixed bag, but works really well. Great with anything thrown at it, which is what I wanted.

I really wanted the Arcam 300/79 combo, but I couldn't have lived with the Genies, and had a tight budget. In the end I saved money on the electronics, and got some better speakers in. It was a smart move in the end and I am more than happy. The Denon kit is great kit in its own right anyway.

Sorry to ramble, but I'm trying to argue the merits of a well balanced system. Its no good bottlenecking the Arcam with the Genies IMO.

I have heard the MA Radius, very lovely looking speakers (especially in black lacquer :smashin: ) I heard the R270's as fronts; R225 as centre; R90's as rears and the R360sub. The only problem is that the above combo is a bit above your budget, they retail at £1300.

However, the Radius are great speakers only let down by the weak sub imo. I'd go for a MJ Acoustics Ref 100 instead!

Whatever you decide I really would recommend to try to demo and avoid blind purchasing, especially if you are spending that sort of money :)

Can you tell me how you came to this conclusion?

Have you actually heard all of these or do you just think they would be better

Adrenochrome - Yep I have demo'd all of those.

The Genie's were great for movies but were let down in 2-channel, also the styling wasn't to my taste.

The Radius (270's; 225's; 90's & 360 sub) were better than the Kef 5005's which I demo'd against on the day, they had a better mid-range and the treble was excellent. They also looked lovely, very WAF  However, the package was let down by the sub, and in stereo felt they were flat at higher volumes.

On to the Castles, given that they were £300 cheaper than the Radius was a plus point straight away. Plus additional positives were the choice of finishes available as well as their diminuitive size! What I liked about them though is that they were brilliant in stereo as well as movies - not as good as a floorstander but for a sub/sat system was the best I'd heard for £1k!

It'll be worth it in the end though, you'll have a very fine setup

What are you running your Quads with at the moment?

Ive demoed the Radius and they are simply awesome. I agree with Tejstar the Genie lacks in stereo.

My dealer didnt have any Quads or Castle. Since im not in the UK is a bit harder to find these dealers.

Which Radius package did you demo Horse? Was it the 270's as fronts; 225 as centre and R90's as rears?
