There are a couple of socket 478 P4's it could be too. The Utility should help but if you have motherboard or make (Dell xxxx) info, that would be useful.

its a intel mobo with LGA775 Socket

very basic board..... 2 pci slots.... onboard graphics...
this is the mobo here
prob is it doesnt have any o/s installed.

or i would of tried cpuz ,

guess i could install xp and see.
or i guess other way is to take the hsf off
and see if it states on the top of the cpu.

same problem here with my 3ghz cpu, that tool never helped me and im still none the wiser, flippin previous owner was not much help either.:thumbsdow

ohh dear slight problem..

i decided to install xp on it to run cpuz to see if that will tell me more info about the cpu.

only prob is its a sata drive,
so i need the sata driver on a floppy
and the intel website doesnt have the drivers i need..

Whip off the heatsing and read what is on the processor (if you have the confidence to do it).

You shouldn't need the SATA driver unless you are using a RAID array?

That's what I thought but someone else on the forums said there is a limit to the size of SATA disk that you can use without special drivers.

I just created a 50GB partition on my disk & installed windows into that.

Later boards have the SATA drives mimic extra IDE drives in their bios but older boards needed the additional drivers.

i know but the mobo has only 1 ide channel for the dvd rom
and 4 sata channels for hdds.

it has only 1 hdd in the case. a seagate 40gb sata..

i already had the pc in bits, nothing on the cpu except the intel symbol, i was expecting it to tell me.

It should have looked something like this?

but does that tell you if its a northwood or prescott ?
If you search the Intel web site for the 5 digit ID you will get the full spec. In this case that's SL7J5.

IIRC, you can ID a Prescott by it's 1Mb cache as opposed to the 512Mb of the Northwood.

skt 775 is a prescott only if i'm not mistaken

Damn site easier when they had 286/386 stamped on them. :D

The fact that it is LGA775 tells you straight away it is Prescott except for early Extreme Edition chips. If it is 1Mb then it is not an EE. As stated above!:)

well i took the hsf off

and on top of the chip is.....

INTEL PENTIUM 4
2.80ghz/1M/800
SL7KJ

:)
