    I'm no expert on insects but would be really interested to know what this is... it is about one and a half inches long.

    That Sir, is a Maybug. A big, harmless and shortlived beetle that comes out at this time of the year. Their most notable attribute is a habit of flying into bedrooms at night, socking into the wall and landing on your head :).

    My brother and I used to try and catch as many as we can as a sort of competition when we were very young. :D

    How do they get so big if they don't live long, do they come from a larvae?...I think I will surf the web and learn all I can!

    Yep, May Fly.

    Big, dumb beetle like things that are harmless if not a little scary at first. Normally found around fields in May and June.

    I was waiting at a bus stop once (One without a shelter, just a sign) and within the space of 5 minutes, 2 decided to fly into the bus stop sign and knock themselves out. Not very intelligent creatures I fear.

    I found out that they are also known as a Cockchafer but how they got that name I daren't guess!
