What Is The Resolution On VHS Tape

    I know its an old medium and on its way out but what is the lines resolution for, VHS SP,LP and S-VHS SP and LP.

    VHS gives you about 240 lines, S-VHS gives you about 400, IIRC.

    Just to be clear about this (sorry if you already knew):

    There are always 576 discrete horizontal lines regardless to machine/type. So the vertical resolution is always 576 (for PAL).

    The maximum number of discrete changes in colour/brightness along each line (which gives the horizontal resolution) is what varies.

    And, as SDC says, 240 and 400 are about as good as it gets.. VHS LP may drop to around 180. SVHS LP may drop to around 350. Depends on the machine. More probably, LP will result in increased noise, rather than significantly reduced definition.
