This may sound like a very stupid question, however, here goes. Can anyone explain the difference or the principles of Dolby Pro Logic 2 as opposed to Dolby Digital.

Dolby Digital comes in many formats (2.0 & 5.1 etc) In the main you get a faithful reproduction of what the person who mixed it wants you to hear. If it was mixed as 2.0 you get 2.0 , if it was 5.1 you get 5.1.
i.e. You are getting signal without extra processing

Pro Logic II invloves extra processing

Pro Logic II takes a stereo signal & then applies processing to try & make 5.1 out of it.

Pro Logic IIx takes a stereo signal & then applies processing to try & make 7.1 out of it.

Would you say then that as a rule of thumb it is better if I turn off the Pro Logic application i.e. dispense with the suedo sound and just listen to the programme as it was intended to be listened to?

You should be able to setup each individual input on your amp to apply processing (or not) to match your wishes.

Personally I have stereo (TV) broadcasts use the Pro Logic processing

DVD movies to playback the DTS or DD as is on the disc

& CD's playback in direct (no processing) stereo mode.
