OK, so what the best terrestrial TV channel and why?

My vote at the moment goes to channel 5. They really seem to be getting some decent Us dramas and be able to show that at decent times without messing them about. :)

BBC1 - love the BBC - National Treasure.

no doubt some short sights plebs will pop up and start moaning about the licence fee

but those arguments have been brushed aside in the past an they will be again.

I have not voted yet It’s a shame there is not a way you can put percentage votes in the poles, I like BBC for there quality productions, ah it is split over 2 channels mmmm OK Five for there showing American imports and not mucking them round like Ch4 although I wish they had not dropped there in signed Dead Zone.

Either of the BBC's for me, I love the US TV shows but find constant commercial interuptions destroys the continuity, so I watch them on DVD.

If you had asked the question 10 years ago, then it would have been an emphatic YES-CHANNEL 4!
As it now stands, there can only be one choice with tons of films, docs, and best of all, the cream of american imports, the answer is - 5!

Well considering that when channel 5 first started it was accused of being a trashy channel and aired a lot of softcore pornographic material, who would have thought that it would be getting more votes (out of the very small amount of people that have voted) :D
Just goes to show you how a channel can change.

I've voted BBC1 but like Garrett if I could split my vote it would be 75% BBC1 and 25% ITV. :)

Edit: and that was my 100th post!

My favourite channel is BBC1 by a long margin :smashin: High quality, advert free, UK programming puts it head and shoulders above the other channels (except BBC2 obviously!).

When I come to think of it BBC1 accounts for over 95% of my TV viewing (depsite having a full Sky subscription) - and much of the other 5% are BBC programmes on satellite channels, e.g. Onedin Line on UKTV Drama.

As for picture quality then ITV1 is certainly the worst - at times you are just watching a series of coloured squares! BBC channels, particularly on Freeview, tend to be the best IMHO.

    BBC2 for me.
Saturday night films (uninterrupted) and some of the comedy shows.
The other channels have their merits. BBC1 for Match of the Day. Channel4 for cricket. Channel5 for kiddies stuff (my daughter would have that as her favourite).
I suspect it would be easier to vote for the worst channel (ITV). I think they are getting worse at chopping films to stick ads in.

    Hi,

Five - without a doubt! No other channel has given UK viewers so many great imported shows, treated them with respect, and also listened to its audience (r.e. the DOG, widescreen, etc), and actually made changes to improve itself, from its less than humble beginnings!

I would have voted Chanenl 4, about 5-10 years ago, but now they are my least favourite terrestrial channel! Anyone seen the new E4 billboard posters that are going-up all over towns and cities in the UK? The one that says something like: "Buying Big Imports For Your Small Screen" is a joke - mainly because it should really read: "We Buy Big Imports, And Shelve Them!" :rotfl:

Well if I was forced to only watch the 5 channels for the next 3 days then it would be the following.

    Weds
    7pm C4 Channel 4 News
8pm C5 Search for the Lost Fighter Bombers
    9pm B2 The Slavery Business
    10pm C4 Lost
11pm B1 Match of the Day

    Thurs
    7pm C4 Channel 4 News
    8pm C5 Call yourself a property developer
    9pm B2 Extras
9.30pm B2 The Catherine Tate Show
    10pm C5 House
11pm B2 tail end of Newsnight followed by Digital Pictures

    Fri
    7pm B1 Departure Lounge
    8pm C5 Stargate Atlantis
    9pm B1 Kiss the Girls
    10pm B1 BBC News
    11pm B1 Kiss the Girls

So it BBC 1, BBC 2 & C5 with 4 programmes, followed by C4 with 3 and nothing for ITV. Although I could of watched Scrubs instead of Stargate Atlantis and then C5 and C4 would reverse places.

So basically for me the channel are fairly even except for ITV which is generally rubbish.

I think E4 must have surveyed only Hollyoaks and Big Brother viewers to find out what the perfect TV channel would be like...and then listened to them...I raise a fist to E4 and say "stick that in yer telly box"!!!!!!!!

spoiler: apart from Lost...I like that.

IMHO there are more important reasons to select a channel that PQ or american imports.

The BBC has a rich heritage of excellent home grown tv, produced for the viewer, rather than the advertiser (hello murdoch! :suicide:)

Also has no adverts, which I cannot stand, and delivers the best comedy in the world.

Of course if you like US telly and consider picture quality to be important as the regulator does at least for analogue broadcasts then that is a good reason to vote for FIVE.

As you say it's only an opinion but I'll concede that overall content is more important and you'll watch and support any broadcaster who provides you with the programming you want.
The BBC, ITV and recently CH4 simply do not do that for me with FIVE still in the ballgame (just). :)

    Another vote for 5.

Only watch the local news on ITV once a week at most and then for only about five minutes as the presenters wind me up. There is nothing else on the channel that I watch with any regularity.

    1, 2 & 4 probably watch 1 or 2 progs on each, each week.
