Am looking to go Sky Digital very soon.

Any opinions on which Digibox is best? Can you specify when you book?

Would prefer a silver one to match rest of equipment. Are the Sony or Panasonic ones Silver?

Will probably book over the Internet direct with Sky. Is this best way or should I get a local supplier to do it.

Personally i would go for either the latest Pana or Sony - checking if either has any extra features (sony - optical out ?). The newest Pana is now all-silver i think, but the Sony is the slimmer of the two - again all-silver.

I would NOT order from Sky direct, but go through a local dealer - and i dont mean Dixon, Curry's etc. With my local satellite
engineer, you can choose whichever box you like - they recommend the 2 above, or the latest Pace.

I have just ordered Sky from a local installer and they recommend the Panasonic due to excellent after sales service. He also said the Sony was a good box. They are both silver. I'm having the Sony because the rest of my kit is silver Sony and also it's the only non Sky+ box to have an optical output. This doesn't mean you will get 5.1 sound as it has a software issue with that but if your amp has auto detect it can select which channels to use as required for music or video.

Here's a link with some pics and details.

Shame neither of those boxes mention a S-video output. OK, possibly not so good for watching with (nothing is absolute), but it's a bit of a pain having to record using composite. Ah well, looks like I'l have to invest in yet another Monster composite to S-video converter cable:(

(unless the scart also carries a S-video signal??)

I like the fact that the Sony is a "standard" A/V width (430mm) - well the same as the rest of my kit anyway!
However nice some of the other digiboxes look, it would really irritate me that they were considerably smaller in width.

Thanks for the assistance. As a secondary question do the Sony or Panasonic boxes have an RGB enabled Scart connector?

If not does anyone know which ones do?

I THINK all Sky digiboxes have RGB capability (it's in the SKy software menus). As I own one, I KNOW the Sony does have RGB

Yes, RGB comes as standard but only the later Grundig boxes (and Sky+) have s-video output. I used a Grundig box (now in the loft) before my Sky+ box. It was okay but not of the same quality as Panasonic and Sony (but I wanted the s-video).

Alan, gladly. I tried to contact you but there does not seem to be an e-mail address registered. I need to tell you a few things about this box first and then you can decide on what you want to do.

Not me though. See how I am only prepared to pay £50 less. I'm a real operator, I am.

Yes, you are probably happy to buy an Aprilia instead of a Ducati.
