    Direct.

    Bypasses internal processing.

If your main left and right speakers are not full range than you cannot really use direct mode as there will be no bass management.

In which case stereo would be better. Ultimately it's your choice though - listen to them all and see what happens. I know some people who swear blind by 5-channel stereo (or the equivalent) and my brother likes PL2 for some reason.

PLII is a must for TV and radio, also for most CD listening... :smashin:

Now, while I had my Onkyo 787 + Arcam DV88, it would sound much better direct, using the DVD´s DACs, and, as I had a REL sub, I could still use the sub´s high-level connection, plus the low-level for surround...

With a good processor, I always use DPLII... :smoke:

OK, I have the sony str-db790. What surround mode would you use to listen to music. The dolby pro locic II music or DTS Neo:6 music modes?

I've been trying them out and feel that the DTS mode is slighly more "forward" and aggressive. So I've been using that. What are your preferences?

    ciber,

Just want to congratulate you to owning a Onkyo 601!!!

I have tried to promote Onkyo here as their x01 series is very good (not only a one brand fan, and if their series isn't good I wouldn't recommend them), but I don't think potential buyers have taken the step as the brand is not that known here as it is in other countries.

Maybe you could give some opinions at the Yamaha DSPAS640ES or MarantzSR5400 thread? superdons thread

I like my CSII mode a lot, but depending on the cd or dvd 2channel DPLII is also used, but my Neo:6 is rarely used.

An excellent review of 601 here
audioholics He kind of liked the All ST mode on the remote. In terms of the pseudo 5.1 modes, he reckons it depends on which cd/tv programs etc you are watching, there is no one single mode that is best for everything.

I tried NEO:6, it would be very convenient to have different settings for center for different sources, but I didn´t like it a bit... :thumbsdow

Technically the answer is listen to the music in the format that it was mastered for. IE 2 channel for normal CD. You may find Direct cleaner and more detailed than Stereo as there are no electronics in the way of the signal.

In Practice listen to it in whichever mode sounds best to you.

You may also find that internal processing of stereo and output via analogue to your Amp sounds more pleasing than digital output from the DVD/CD and the Amp doing the processing. Depends on the DACs in each device, but worth a try.

    Sorry to confuse the situation.
