What is screen door?

Have you seen those American houses (usually in the country) which have an extra, lightweight door fitted outside the main front and back doors? The extra doors, which are presumably to keep out insects, generally consist of a wooden framework with a very fine metal mesh stretched over it.

They're called "screen doors".

Now imagine looking through one of those doors. You'd see a very fine network of lines criss-crossing the view.

With some projectors, especially LCD models, the projected image is criss-crossed by a very similar network of fine lines - the screendoor effect.

Normally, if you sit at a reasonable distance from the screen, the effect is almost, or entirely, invisible. But it's fair to say that some viewers find it more objectionable than others.
