I'd put these three here for a start: (three games from three different ages of computer):

    Pacman
    The Secret of Monkey Island
    Doom

The first Dune RTS game from Westwood studios had me replaying it countless times more than any other pc ever.
In terms of hours logged that would have to be the HL1 mod Day of Defeat. On average 2 hours a day for the last 4 years :)
So if you want one game only that would be the original Half Life though i only played the game for the first couple of levels.

    I'd put forward 4 contenders:

Championship Manager 2 - a triumph of gameplay and addictiveness
Doom - IMO this is when the FPS genre really came to life
Quake - for its effect on multiplayer gameplay
Half Life - for showing us the standards we should expect

A couple more years and I'd say we could add Half Life 2 to the list.

Legendary PC games, well as you may guess my first is:

Thief The Dark Project Gold Edition. It is the first game first person game I have played more than once in fact it is the only one I have played 3 time all the way through, even yesterday I was sent a link to a site to look up game and my first look was of this game and the pictures got me longing to play it again.
Thief was probably the first game to use stealth, and defined it for other that followed it, although non have never matched it.

    Second
Diablo II it is a game that I can come back to time and time again. Although the story plays the same with 7 different characters and the different skill builds you can give each one make it near ever lasting.

    Third
Civilization II is a swine of a game that steals your time away, (like Garrett steals your positions i.e. without you knowing :D ). It is a game that keeps you going for just one more turn, and then an other, next you know its 2 in the morning.

    Hmmm.....

    System Shock 2
    Master of Magic/Orion
    Doom
    Deus Ex
    Day of the Tentacle
    Elite

Oh dear, you meant singular? I don't think I'm capable of picking just one game...

    In no particular order...

Doom for starting the whole FPS frenzy
Quake for developing it still further (1st with mouse look? Correct if this is wrong) and of course deathmatch
    Elite for being so addictive
Gauntlet for being one of the best co-op games ever invented
Pacman because it used to empty my pocket every Friday!

Then it was not a legendary PC game, but a arcarde game.

PS I did not say Elite or Civ 1 as they were BBC games or Amiga games to me also Elite first came out on the BBC first, running on 32k.

Yes, Elite is legend, same as Phoenix or few legendary "Ultimate" 3D games for ZX Spectrum but I was talking about PC's here.

Pacman however was one of the first games that ruled on XT PCs.

Sorry Plump I do not want to seem to be getting argumentive but shouldn’t what you class as legendary game for the PC been developed for the PC or strongly associated with the PC, rather than legendary games that can be played on the PC.

I would class Elite as one of the best games of all times and for its time and legendary, but legendary PC game no, if you see the difference.

Anyway that’s just my personal opinion.

I would agree with Garrett, a legendary game for the PC should have been developed for the PC.

My legendary games are in no particular order :-

    Doom 2
    Half-Life
    System Shock 2
    Mechwarrior 2
    Diablo
    Dune (the original)
Populous (not sure if this was PC or amiga?)

Based on what Garrett says - quite reasonably, and my lack of memory in recollecting Civ's original origins, I'll go with Civ2.

I think at the time Civ came out, the Amiga was the computer that was the most popular with gamers, but this did not last very long as I remember that Eye of the Beholder III was not developed for it and only for the PC.

Garett, I do completely agree with you (about Elite and the other games mentioned).

The only reason I put Pacman there is that it was the very first game that came out for the first generation of PCs (if you can remember those times). PCs were advertized as computer for serious use at the time.

It is arcade machine game indeed but it reminds me to the very beginning of PCs.

    Quake 2
    Half-Life
System Shock 2 (otherwise know as the " :censored: what was that" genre)
    Dune (the original)

I know this about PC but I have to mention the three greatest games I ever played on Amiga

    Monkey Island
    Elite 2
Duterous (think I spelled it wrong, but this games still pulls me back via amiga emulation)

    I would say.

    Homeworld:

    The first decent 3D RTS.

    Command and Conquer:

An excelent RTS and along with Homeworld got me into PC gaming.

    The Sims:

Brought PC gaming to the masses.

    Sim City:

    Started PC gaming! (IMHO)

    Half Life:

    Revolutionised the FPS!

I think Elite was the most expensive game I ever bought it cost(I think) £212 alone for a disk drive and my computer chiping so I could play the floppy version of it.

My vote would be for Dungeon Keeper.

That was one of the few PC games I ever bothered to finish.

    1. Master Of Orion 2
    2. Civ 2
    3. Transport Tycoon

    4. Mech 2 Mercs tied with Starcraft

These win because i spent the most time between Master of Orion 2, Civ 2 or Transport Tycoon, as they suck you in and by the time you relise it one more turn is 8 am and you might as well not sleep. Well it was when i was back at school but beeing a working man, i never get to play games any more :(

For multiplayer i would say Starcraft is my all time fav, with Warcraft 3 being my current, simply because of all the custom maps.

    Each section is in order

    For TBS
Master of orion 2 (3 was poo)
    Civ 2 (3 was poo)
    Alpha Centuri

    For FPS
Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, Totaly non linear campiegns and atmospheric (this is actualy the forth in the series, and was never able to get as good as this again)
Dues Ex (best first person shooter apart from above)
    Duke nuk'em 3D
    Quake 2
Wolfen stien 3D (the origional FPS and better than doom IMHO)

    Third person game/RPG
Vampires the maskerade redemption (Haven't played the next one yet), my maes got a bit obsesed about this and started playing to see who could finish it the fastest and with the most experience, I think it got down to 22 hours!
BattleTech, Cresent hawks inception (Amazing rpg from eary 90's was just too short for my likeing)
Diablo 2 (played through the game 16 hours a day for 3 days, had to stop as i was playing even in my dreams :s)

    Tycoon games
Transport Tycoon Deluxe (because nothing else has ever come close and locamotion was a disapointment)

    RTS
Starcraft, crap gfx but me and my mates still play multiplay against the computer!
Dune 2 (the origional RTS and had voices! on my 386 or was it 486 ) for nastalgior and the fact i could never do that last level
Warcraft 2 (multiplayer is crap as the bots are stupid, probably the best single player though)
C&C Generals most polished RTS and good for a 30min fix
    C&C Red alert
Warcraft 3 (single player isn't really upto that much, but i like the multi)

    Beat'em'up (doesn't really count)
Don't think there were many (if any) origional to the PC, but i had
    Street Fighter 2 (some edition)
    battle arena toshinden
These were very good and probably better than the arcade version.

That happened to you too with the Orion games? Hmmm while I was at uni, the number of times I'd look out the widows and think "the suns up? when did that happen" :rotfl: I enjoyed Master of Magic better though...

The new vampire game (Bloodlines) is good, but incredibly buggy. It's had one patch, but still needs patching.

I really enjoyed Starcraft and the warcraft games.

I also played X2 for about 2 and a half months at all available moments last year. SO I guess I must have really liked that!

Max Payne 2, for being incredibly polished (And HL2 for the same reason)

Best RPG I've played probably goes to Baldurs Gate 2, it just went on and on.... Also enjoyed SW:KOTOR a lot.

I've bought X2 and Xtension . I've only played X2 for a couple of hours - I've given up for now because I have no idea where to start trading. I was given 100c and I can't seem to buy anything that can be sold for a higher price elsewhere
