what is FILM MODE...? (help with Judder)

I have noticed this FILM MODE on my LG 32LG5700, what is it for?

I experience some judder on some SKY/SKY+HD programs and im trying to reduce it...

also, doe the AV modes (CINEMA, GAME , SPORT) just change the picture color settings or is there some extra processing that goes on to actually reduce motion blur etc...?

Ive been experiencing some judder on panning shots and some flicker when theres lots of white on screen and camera pans around

but this was with FILM MODE - off and AV MODE - off... and PICTURE on VIVID (User Defined Setttings)

can anyone recommend anything here?

I'm not sure about it all but game mode reduces input lag (takes out some processing) and I think sport mode reduces response time and motion blurring. Cinema normally gives the most natural colours, whether this is something you can get to in other modes I'm unsure though. Vivid obviously makes everything really really bright a vivid!

I'm not sure what film mode does, although I do remember reading about it somewhere! I would guess that you could at least reduce the flicker and juddering you're getting

I've got the 37lf66 and I have had some joy at reducing judder from my Sony S350 bluray player by changing the hdmi input to PC from Dvd.... Infact I've changed both hdmi inputs to PC and seen an improvement in picture quality on the bluray player and Sky Hd.....

It may work for you.

eh? you mean the input labelling? - isnt that just to give them names?

if your TV is 1080x1920 it should playback at 24p if you enable it in the Blu-Ray player... according to sources to conform to HD ready 1080p TV's MUST playback 1080/24p - mine wasnt advertised as having 24p but upon more checking it has and ive tested it and it does indeed play blu-ray at 1080/24p when enabled in the player.... i tested it with my mates Blu-Ray as i dont have one..

the JUDDER i get is on SKY+HD

I was having trouble with bluray judder and read on a forum somewhere that changing the input lable actually changes the way the port responds.
It worked for me..

i was thinking that myself aswell sometime ago....

anyway your TV supports 24p so just enable 24p playback in yer blu-ray player and you should get less/no judder

But always keep in mind that there is a certain amount of judder present in all Blu-ray movies, so you will not be judder-free unless you activate some form of frame interpolation on the tv (100Hz, Motionflow etc.)

24p was enabled but the judder was very noticable. It is still enabled but with the lable set to PC the picture seem a lot more natural and the the judder has improved.

check the video review........... Like I say, messing with the inputs has worked for me. The blueray picture was over saturated when set to DVD, it is much better, and in my opinion sharper, set to PC.

yeah that just says it assigns labels and icons to it making it 'user-friendly' (unless ive missed summit further down - wasnt gunna read whole thing)

mines a 32G5700 and mine seems to be just for show, my label only changes the name (doesnt change icon on label) and does NOTHING to the picture

yeah i seen the video...

that must be for higher end models only or my firmware needs updating - when i change the label it changes the name only and doesnt add an icon OR change the picture in anyway

i seen the judder example on that iRobot - i hope mine isnt gunna be like that cos i couldnt stand that... and will want to take it back, i will have to borrow a Blu-Ray player and try it out.... as far as i know it takes a 24p input but how it handles nobody knows for sure cos manufacturers dont make it very clear at all with 3:2 pulldown , 24hz , 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown , 5:5 pulldown , 100Hz , 120Hz...

i mean why the hell did they decide to film in 24fps anyway and/or make TV's/Broadcasts to contradict it????

oh BTW my judder isnt like that where it skips a beat twice a second - mines something else... its like you when you pause you can see mix of both frames from interlacing but on some fast moving objects or panning shots its noticeable in real time

...more of a stuttering effect - well this is whats happening on my SKY+HD sometimes on fast panning scenes - its like a stutter/flicker effect....

when a camera pans around (not too fast or too slow) the objects on screen appear to stutter/flicker (like from 5-10 times a second or so) and when you PAUSE it you see a mix of a few frames - yeah im watching 1080i on JUST-SCAN but doesnt the SKY+HD Box De-Interlace it? so i shouldnt get this - judder motion

that example on the iRobot for that review on link above on the Blu-Ray playback i would describe as FRAME-DROPPING cos essentially thats what it is

What you should be seeing is a steady roll (flow) of the credits, but if you look closely you will see that there is typically a juddering of the words as they scroll up the screen, albeit an evenly paced judder. The scrolling will only become silky smooth if you switch on some from of 100Hz (frame interpolation). Obviously you will only see this if you are fairly close to the tv, but this type of juddering is normal.

Just to add the frame drops on last years LGs were largely associated with the 7000 series, not the rest of the range, although there is still no guarantee of perfectly smooth blu-ray playback

ok had PANASONIC blu-ray player and QUANTUM OF SOLACE on....

in 24p mode i got the 'judder' once per second but very acute - disabling the 24p in the BD player remove the once-a-second judder and motion was same as my SKY+HD - it looked OK but still a bit flickery....

so I have NOT seen true 24p so I cant comment if my SKY+HD is getting pulldown or interlacing type artifacts....

the BD player outputted at 1080p / 60Hz with 24p off and was just same as my SKY

with 24p enabled my TV reported 1080p / 24Hz ... but this must just indicate the input and not what its actually running the screen at....

my TV isnt sold as having 24p playback but on a specs sheet it has 1080p/24/30/50/60 for HDMI - this must just mean it can TAKE a 24hz input but does its own pulldown to 50Hz...

...wished i could see 24p in action somewhere so i can tell if my TV is duff or Im just being over-sensitive to poor motion judder/blur...

imn going to discuss taking it back with my partner as it also has very acute banding
