Do you use a projector or a TV to view your DVD's? If you only use a TV, you probably won't see it...I'll find a linkand post it here. Edge enhancement is, IMO, the scurge of watching DVD's via a PJ. Tombstone is by far the worst offender - even worse than Die Another Day...

Have a read of this - many thanks to cybersoga, who posted the original link...:smashin:

I think all of us who review for Total DVD are critical of EE....Army Bloke sums it up nicely.

I'd add another to that list of terrible examples....the R1 Die Hard boxset - Die Hard with a Vengeance has THE most terrible EE I've ever seen...

High frequency areas of the image have a contrast addition applied to them. This accentuates highly delineated areas of the image in an attempt to make the overall image appear sharper.

However it also introduces additional edge artifacts ( ringing) edges appear to have a ghost image of the edge to one or both and or top and bottom. Edge enhancemtn itself is fin in principle but the detection techniques used to limit its appliance to areas of the image that require it are too simplistic in domestic application to be worthwhile . Really you end up with an image that isn't noticably sharper and riddled with ringing and additional noise.

The unsharp mask image operator technique of sharpening is a fairly simple form of edge enhancement : even that is probably more sophisticated than the techniques currently employed on dvd masters.

On a bog standard TV edge enhancement isn't normally too invasive but on larger displays is sticks out like a sore thumb and ruins the filmic look most of us strive for.

The superbit discs despite their inflated claims do tend to have little or no edge enhancement in comparisson to the normal releases.

Tombstone is like watching the movie with an indoor ariel...there seems to be 2 of everything on the screen but the second one is a ghost...even close up shots.
    Totally unnecessary IMO...

All other things being equal - the one with less EE. Even on small screens, EE gives images a kind of processed, electronic look that detracts, in my view, from the 'filmic' experience.

Can see it just as well on my old 28" widescreen Sony and Marantz DVD player as I can with my 50" plasma and prog-scan player, and on my PC and laptop.

Region 1 discs often have Edge Enhancement added to give the illusion of higher resolution; the technique was invented back in the mists of time by the BBC to do the same with 405 line tv.

"Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition" R1 still has one of the worst cases of EE ever seen, on 28" CRT or any display.

It is pretty noticable on my 32" TV however not using RGB may hid it, RGB needs no sharpening, so sharpening appears quite horrible.

Worst I've ever seen is R1 Die Hard 3.
I'm sure this would be noticable on a 14" portable!
Reminded me of the old Ready-Brek adverts

I have just got the extreme copy of T2. The tope few lines of pixels look very odd like they have no colour. Is this EE or just a duff copy? I have a Sony 7700 DVD going through AVC-A1SR into 36" Sony.
    Any help?

    Cheers
    Luke

Tried it on my PC and its the same so it must be the disk. Any body else had problems with this disk? I have to say at teh momnet its Extremely crap!

I only have a 24" WS TV but the Reservoir Dogs look like the kid from the old Ready Brek advert.

This is edge enhancement, the halo effect surrounding/ghosting the images.

I have read all that found it very interesting. How ever that was the ultimate edition not the extreme addition that I have. The extreme one is from the remaster for the WMP9 HD version and is supposed to be really good!

I'd agree with that, put it on the projector a couple of months ago and thought the edge enhancement was the worst I've ever seen. Utterly terrible imho

I've got a copy of 'Enemy of the State' and I always wondered why the picture was so poo. Is this film 'enhanced' with this feature?

Yes. (speaking about R1 and R4 editions; guess they are all the same in this respect).
