Which platform do you use most to play video games?
No chance of a Gamecube option Stuart?
This is interesting - it's early days yet, but despite the Sony PS2 being by far the most popular console, XBOX is way ahead in the poll.
Now I do not want to start a console war (please!), but could it be that the majority of PS2 users are schoolkids (10 to 16 age) who just stick it on a composite connection and don't care about PQ, whereas XBOX users tend to be more mature and do care (and have the wherewithal to afford nice TV's)?
I wonder if the same poll was run on an MTV or FHM site, would we see a different result?
I voted PS2 (rgb scart) as even though there's an Xbox and Cube sat right next to it they rarely even get switched on.
I'm 33 by the way
Thats nothing, I'm 36 and I have an X-Box and my mates come round to play
With 62 votes cast out of 61,600 members I would doubt whether the results so far are representative of anything.
PC - I play FPS games and couldn't cope with using anything but a keyboard and mouse!
PS2 and PSP.
Most definitely NOT 10-16 years old, and some thousands of pounds (Stirling) in AV equipment.
A great many PS2 owners are probably not online, and not AV types though, so yes the results here would/will probably not be repesentative of gaming that goes on day-in day-out around the world.
X-Box for me, even though i have a Gamecube, Psone and Dreamcast sat along side it, its mainly used for the 'retro' stuff like Snes, Megadrive, Neo Geo etc. and ocationally ~Halo and the likes.
and its RGB scart to my TV and Component to my PJ when the fancy takes me.
I voted PC because of my Wolfenstein : ET addiction, but if it were between the consoles, then the PS2 would have got my vote. It was a close call in the first place. Aged 34 and rising.
This poll will show the proportion of forum members using the listed consoles. I don't expect it to be representative of the population at large since the demographic of forum members is not the same as the population at large. 97% men, average age 36.
But it's a useful poll to guage which consoles might deserve their own forums.
It's quite straightforward in that the X-Box simply appeals to more AV types than the PS2. The X-Box has High Def gaming, a hard drive that can allow it to be used as a media centre, 5.1 DD in game sound and the DVD player can run in Prog Scan via XBMC. The PS2 on the other hand is only ever really used as a games machine, or a poor DVD player.
On a forum where having the best picture and sound, along with the best functions is paramount then it's very easy to see why most of us prefer the X-Box. X-Box live is also a big factor in it being more popular than the PS2 as the PS2 service isn't much cop compared.
You'd certainly get a very different result. PS2 would almost certainly get over 60% of the votes of site such as the ones you mention. This is probably down to the type of visior that they get, age etc. wheras as posters here are more, for want of a better phrase, more 'switched on' to what is better or gives the best experience.
For me the xbox wins hands down, the choice made all the easier by the frankly superb 'Live' service
Excellent! Im another ET addict. Ive playing this game solid for over 2 years now and still no other gaming experience comes close imo. I have all 3 consoles, yet ET gets the most playtime!
What servers do you play on Dunk1970?
Playstation 2 for me. The Xbox just never apealed to me and I hate the controll pad, far to bulky.
Playstation and Ps2 and I am 30 years old.
I voted X-Box, only because I use my PS2 for Pro Evo 4 these days and X-Box for everything else (just can't seem to get on with Pro Evo on X-Box for some reason?). Actual play time might be neck and neck between the 2 though as Pro Evo gets a lot of play time in my house! Oh, X-Box connected using Hi-Def component kit and PS2 via RGB scart.
ya i used to have a ps2,but converted to an x-box coz it has dolby digital 5.1 surround, and a more powerful machine,it sounds awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!
i voted xbox, not played on ps2 since i got xbox - shame really cos it was pretty good when it came out. Xbox miles better once you get used to pad layout!!

It *usually* steers clear of the newbies and annoying folk. The guy who runs it, maintains www.wolfstuff.org to display every stat imaginable. Great for analyzing exactly what you are good and bad at.
On the X-Box vs PS2 debate, another reason that more people might be saying X-Box here is because, with this being a 30+ avwerage age, we all have more disposable income than the average console user. Games (certainly used to) cost more on the X-Box, and the more limited range available means that you need to go and buy both consoles anyway. Also, with the X-Box being little more than a fast processing PC, its games are usually out on the PC within a couple of months.
Personally, I've stuck with the PS2 because it always had the best *range* of games. That's probably evening our a bit now, but I'd be interested to know what you guys will go for now that the better machine of the next generation is going to be the PS3?
In my opinion the best racing sim series is GT.
In my opinion the best futuristic racing sim series is WipeOut.
In my opinion the best football series is PES.
They are what I own a console for now, since First Person Shooters are only any good on the PC, as are the other battle fighting games.
Also, how many people here honestly play games where 5.1 DD comes into play? Most games simply aren't that sophisticated, and quite often it's the ones that have had most focus spent on sound and graphics that are poorest in gameplay.
On paper...until we all actually see the next gen machines playing with actual finished release titles on them I dont think any of us can say which is actually going to be the best can we?
I thought that until Forza was released...but I think GT4 is a big disapointment compared to this
Well I can honestly say that the likes of Forza and Halo 2 are helped immensly with the immersive 5.1 sound they have on them.
Gotta be PC for me, especially with my current Battlefield2 addiction!
F-Zero for me although GX on the Gamecube is really quite hard.
In answer to Dunk, I'll be staying with Microsoft. We have two XBoxes, both since launch, and both have been utterly reliable. Our dealings with MS support (registering the product, applying for the 'loyalty refund') have been quick and efficient.
I'm also concerned at Sony's proposal of having their hard drive optional (rather than supplied fitted, out of the box as with XB360). This seems half-baked and will split the gamers into haves and have-nots - how can the developers make use of a device that only *some* gamers have?
Performance-wise, I don't think there will be very much in it. According to Edge mag it's a matter of swings and roundabouts, and as for the higher HD spec on the PS3, this will not matter to more than about 0.01% of gamers, with the 360's 720p being about the max that most will bother with. Apart from eye-burners like us, that is
It's interesting to see that the relative rankings of the major platforms has stayed the same throughout the voting:
...someone mentioned that the poll was unrepresentative when only 60 odd votes had been cast. Well over 300 have now and the positions are staying more or less the same.
1) Best Racing Sim - Forza Motorsport (X-Box) - much better than GT4 - Online racing, better visual modifications, much better AI, no annoying invisible walls, much better track & scenery graphics.
2) Best Futuristic racer - WipeOut Pure (PSP) - Fusion on the PS2 is poor. The best version after Pure is 2097 on the PS1.
3) Best Footie game - PES4 (X-Box) - Online play along with smoother and slightly more detailed graphics and no slowdown make this the Best version of PES available IMO.
5.1 DD in game sound makes a huge difference. In Forza you actually feel that you're in the car with all the sounds correctly coming from where they should. In FPS games like Halo2 and GR2 you hear the shots clearly fly past you and can hear where the enemies are coming from. 5.1 DD sound is just much more imersive than your standard PLII - even PES4 on the X-Box sounds much better than the flat sounding PS2 version. You really feel that you are there and the sounds are much clearer.
Anyway there's a separate thread for aguing about the various consoles and their merits so if this discussion is to be continued then please direct your thoughts to that thread .
Yeah, so most of the 5.1 DD is being quoted in relation to FPS games which the PC owns.
Gotta admit, I don't know Forza, but I'll take some convincing because XBox fanboys were hailing Gotham Racing as the best thing when it was their only alternative.
Having owned W2097 and WFusion, I can't agree that 2097 is the best. I loved it back in 1997, but the graphics have come a long way since then. Plus there are more and better tracks, more raceable ships, more weapons etc etc. Only real thing that 2097 had better was Firestarter by the Progidy. Both awesome games and F-Zero aint even close.
I never got the slow-down others experienced with PES4. There were some that posted solutions to the problem on GameFaq, and I think it just required a configuation tweak.
GT4 was a disappointment true. GT5 is due to come out on the PS3 and to redeem itself it must gain car damage and online play.
As for waiting to see about performance difference, that's a little bit of a head in the sand approach isn't it? The spec for the performance of the PS3 is clearly way in advance of the XB360. The stats aren't even close.
Sony do need to address the online issue, but hey, at least they aren't trying to charge you for online play.
Dunk, what you have to remember is that quite a few people on these forums are owners of quite a few of the consoles and hand helds in Stuarts list ( I have an XBox, PS2 and Gamecube all in constant use ) and so we are not coming from the ' my console is better than your console' side of the argument...we are simply giving views and informative judgement on the 'big three' after using them all in our own homes.
Everything will always be down to personal opinion when it comes to games and some will stick by what they like best even if it is painfully obvious that it is not.
Head in the sand? Not really. I am being completely realistic in that we, as the paying public, have not yet had the 'actual' machines in front of us in our homes and been able to sit down and play a few games on each to make up our own minds about what is the best!
Two car manufacturers can release a new model each and one can be clearly better spec and rated compared to the other on paper....but get them both out on the road driven by your average car enthusiast and the story may be completely different with the high rated car being a massive let down!
As Cas Fan says though, this is not the thread for this discussion. I feel, like others have said, that the XBox does lend itself more to a home cinema set up than the PS2 or Gamecube does. They are bnoth great machines but I just dont think they have the same kind of 'integration' that the XBox has. I have just posted a thread about the age of XBox Live players after being told I was too old by workmates and it seems that most are in their thirties ( on here anyway) so it would seem that the XBox also has a larger ownership base of 'thirty-somethings' whilst the PS2 is owned mostly by younger people.
The thing is, with the pricing still being talked about for the next gen consoles, are we going to see them being taken up by older people rather than kids more and more? Will the next gens be a primaraly adult medium with very few kids being abel to afford them?
Re-read my post and you will see that most of the 5.1DD quoted was not in relation to FPS's. The better sound benefits all X-Box titles that i've played.
You clearly haven't got or played much on an X-Box as you wouldn't be making these comments if you had. I own every current console and have no reason to be biased to either one.
Wipeout fusion has better graphics than 2097 but is no way near as good a game. Wipeout Pure on the PSP makes Fusion look very poor indeed - i suggest you try that if you're into Wipeout. F-Zero GX is actually far better than Wipeout Fusion (although does take a lot of skill to play) - the 60 fps graphics are awsome and if you get into it the game is great fun.
PGR2 is a different sort of game to GT but I would easily prefer to play it than GT. Forza is a similar type of game to GT but is far better - don't take my word for it, read the reviews. GT4 has better car models but is inferior in every other department. I guess if all you're bothered about is car models then GT is the one to go for .
Regarding the performance of the PS3 being far superior to that of the 360 - I doubt it. Only those with short memories have forgot that the PS2 was supposed to be far, far better than the Dreamcast. Actually it turned out that the DC was the more capable machine in many peoples eyes. You may believe Sony's claims this time but i'd say that you are in the minority .
Anyway Dunk1970 you clearly use the PS2 more than any other machine so I guess you've answered the question posed by this thread.
