    … the Denon 2805!

So the Denon 280x series maintains its crown.

I always thought it would be a close match between these and the Yamaha 750. Anyway, well done Denon :smashin:

    Cheers,

Always find the What Hi-FI Awards most bizarre and this is no change

Think it was awarded it last week (thats what bloke in local store told me anyway) but when you look at there recent Best of the Year type magazine that came out in last few weeks the 2805 gets the briefest of brief mentions and is about 4 pages in of the AV amp reviews

Few people may be annoyed by this

Not me though - having just traded in My Denon A1D for a Yamaha 2400 and subesquently hearing the 2805 I know I made a good decision

And thats from a BIG Denon lover

I have to say im not suprised by this what hi-fi seems to drool over every Denon that they get and i hear tell a lot of the writers have denons. (Coincendence??) Anyway i am to Demo the 2805 along with the 2105 (the latter is more in my reach) But if its worth it i may save a little while longer for it. But there is no Hi-Fi shops in my area that have the yamaha 750 in stock to demo

IMO the Yamaha 750 will serve you better than the 2105 (no video conversion) although the 2805 is probably marginally superior to the Yamaha.

As far as I understand, Denon won awards for the 1905 and 2105 also - looks like they've got a but of a Denon thing going on! Wither that or a nice big cheque...

Just picked up the magazine. Denon 1905 won A/V receiver product of the year, the 2105 and 2805 won their price groups, but the arcam 250 piped the 3805 to the £1000 price bracket crown.

Hi all, I'm just looking at these two: the 2805 and the 2105 and am learning towards the latter for my tight budget. My question is: do you think the 2105 would drive B&W 603 speakers well? My room is not big, about 3.5m x 4.5m. Thanks in advance!

It's all a crock if you ask me, they've been going on about the Sony STB795 for months, relegating the Denon 1905 to also ran, but now the Denon's receiver of the year and the Sony doesn't even get a mention. Hmmmmmmmm fishy.

My ex's brother in law works on the mag, I'm going to take him up on this next time I see him. :nono:

    Dudes,

What Hi-Fi reviews and awards help you gather a shortlist of items to demo in a shop or at home.

The only true test of whether a piece of hi-fi is any good is trying it out against it's competitors, and matching it to your system.

I've tested the Denon 3805 against the Yamaha 2400, and I preferred the Yamaha. Others may feel the Denon best suits their system.

Denon are the new Mission. What Hi-Fi used to love every Mission speaker ever!

    Cheers

They were comparing the Sony 795 to the Denon 1705 which was a mismatch in price wise. But I notice that they only give the Denon 1905 4 stars in the back of the magazine and the Sony795 5 stars.

They go head to head in the review of 1 make systems in the last mag. I just find it strange that the Sony which was supposedly their system of choice up to £300 doesn't even get a mention in the awards issue (unless I missed it while reading it in WH smith). Especially as I'm expecting my Sony to arrive from HiFI bitz next week. LOL.

Not havin a go a Denon kit because its very good, but this award would have had the same amount of validity if it had been awarded by Horse and Hound magazine!

I think it was because they though the Denon DVD player let the system down.

Is there any reason you went for the Sony over the Denon? As I'm considering getting one of them.

Well, I admit that I wasn't able to audition them and so went on the reviews. Initially I was dead set on the Denon but I searched out as many reviews of them both as possible and most seemed to be more impressed with the Sony for Stereo and Multichannel music (quite important to me) and also seemed slightly more gushing about the Movie performance. The decision was also swung by the extra wattage available from the Sony.

Okay i have demo'd both the Denon 2105 the 2805 the 3805 and the yammie 1400 and its ionteresting because you really can hear the step up from the 2105 to the 2805 but the step from 2805 to 3805 is marginal at best!
Anyway my opinions of the 2105 are that while the sound is very detailed it isnt good at subtle (glass tinkerling in bad boys 2 sounds flat) But it does steer very very well and has some composure even when i pushed it in the burly brawl scene. But it isnt very dynamic and struggles with sound changes. The 2805 didnt struggle with anything the glass sparkled when it broke, even the steering was more precise and a lot sharper with the transfer from one speaker to the other. The yammie lacked the composure detail of the denon but shere force and crazy dynamics of the yammie made me sit up again and take note. The yamie definately prefers guns to voices. The denon 3805 at that price point really ought to be better i honestly couldnt decide between the two which sounded better, and my opinion is that yamaha still had the edge on speed and dynamics.
My fav was the denon i prefer detail the sheer force but if yoour a huge action buff go for the yamaha. If you like rom coms go away! As for the awards i told you they had a thing for denons!

LOL Yea thats the same case for me, I just hope it lives up to my expectations, I would love to demo products but it would of cost me £60 more for the amp and £60 more for the rear speakers. So if i buy from the web it allows me to get another pair of rear speakers nearly from that money.

Well, if they did blind equipment testing like hifi choice mag then i will give their awards a bit more credit. I have little respect for their reviews.

Know what you mean. Blind listening is really the only way to go with hi-fi or anything as otherwise you're likely to be influenced by your preference for brands.

The bottom line is pound for pound (euro for euro) Denon still offer the most for your money.

I can't agree on the 2805. Turn it up a bit and the detail gets lost. The 3805 is much much better for not a lot more.

Anyway anyone who buys hifi on a mags say so deserves all they get.
