  Picked up my copy of What Hi Fi Awards 2006 edition this morning and the award for the best 40inch+ flat screen TV has been won by the Pioneer 436 XDE. The magazine praises "its outstanding picture quality." With DVD and HD "the image is still-water smooth and blacks are deep and rich." They also claim class leading contrast and detail levels. Their only caveat is the panel can still have problems with fast moving sports.

It certainly isn't the worst 'domestic' plasma I've seen.. ;)

On the fast sports thing.. I was horrified when I first got the 436, and hooked it upto sky, even channel surfing via the EPG which has lots of changing white text on a blue background had a weird interlacing effect as the text changed, and ticker tapes on News channels also was almost unreadable..

I was panicking until I turned off the Advanced Cinema Mode on what ever it is.. silky smooth now..

I have watched football with it off and on, and off, its perfect, as smooth as you would ever want, but left 'on' football suffers badly...

Wash your mouths out the lot of you... :nono:

I'm sure that objectivity is the mantra of these fine journalists...

I'll wager none of them have been seen in the Little Chef at Leigh Delamare services in the dead of night with brown envelopes from the good people a Pioneer...

Nice one pete: very good post!! certainly sums up the panel & scaler owners very well. With panels & scalers your into the law of diminishing returns. Is it worth £800-1000 pounds for a slight difference. I leave it to the individual to decide.

Except it's not £800-1000 more... maybe only a couple of hundred.

I'm naturally gonna stand up for processors here, but the difference is anything but slight. Unless your half blind in which case save your money and buy a Hitachi or a Samsung or something!!

    Love Pete's summation though!!

I thought that to some "experts" publisher reports just don't count!!
That is what some say here at their convenience

What Future mag was this?? Which was this issue?? Or can you tell us which
other screen had a Best Buy too?? Thus the same people who tested these
screens are all "half blind"....right??

The Hitachi 42PD7200 has been a Best Buy on all Future mags since last May, or even April I think......and in the September issue of WP issue 16 was even rated better than the 42PV500, PDP435XDE, P42HHA40, Sammy and LG.....

Go through that mag again I think you missed that....or perhaps all Future publications...... :rotfl:

    Cheers

I got my pv500 with pedestal stand for £2000 & free del. Now i know a phd8 from avsales is roughly £2100 add in hdmi, scart, & component boards say £250 plus around £80 del, that makes what roughly £2430. Now stick a scaler on for the hell of it what £600-800. Where at £3k+ before you know it. It seems perfection is not such a small price to pay after all!!

The thing is I 100% understand where Maw and Liam are coming from, it must be very frustrating for them knowing each and every one of us who's invested in these so called 'Award Winners' could obtain better results if we just took there advice.

I myself feel like standing by the till at Comet and saying to each customer that passes through "£200 cheaper at Empire Direct", "You can get that £600 cheaper at LEConcepts" etc etc.

But at the end of the day if you don't know any different, it don't matter.

although i will read the awards addition of What hi-fi as people like MAW and other AV vetrans have said. I will take it with a pinch of salt. I prefer getting bonafide feedback from owners and users of this site, which i use for information and research from all that Av equipment we all lust after.

Having said that, ultimately if your spending the type of cash we have to spend to get the best. Surely you can't beat a good old demo using are eyes and ears !!!!.

Dont forget all these magazine reviewers may have a hidden agenda, when praising all these manufacturers.

My advice...read the information, but make your own mind up!!!!!......anyone agree?

After switching off the Advanced Cinema Processing, or whatever its called, I can't now see any motion artefacts at all, even with Football, of which I've managed 3 whole matches so far ;)...

I've watched lots of motosport as well, no problems...

Is there a sure fire way of seeing this issue that affects fast moving sports? or is it just that POS Cinema processing malarky??

Hell yeah. Mag's are a source of info on a lot of the equipment available for general use for the majority. But it is just one source of info. A good demo, advice from owners, dealers, retailers on here, should all be taken into account before a decision is made. If you're going to spend hundreds, and thousands, it's worth taking the time to get the best you can that looks/sounds good to you.

    Cheers

What hi-fi didn't include 50" + because their reasoning was that most people do not have a room big enough to enjoy one. Rubbish I say, I sit 9ft from my 436 and would be more than happy to have a 506 in front of my face but the small issue of an extra £1K, ended that dream for me.
