what hard drive for Technomate 6900 combo super?

Would the TM-6900 HD COMBO Super take a hdd up to 1TB? is it better to connect via usb or e-SATA? (as long as it comes out of standby to record.
If the hdd needs an external power supply, unless 500GB usb powered, I guess the hdd needs to stay switched on all the time and does power down to standby when not in use?

I think I saw when I got the 6800 that 500gB is the maximum so I've always used those, but I could be wrong.
Until recently I've used simple externally powered caddies connected by USB, but now have a dock working the same way.
They all work very well.
My usual procedure is to power on the caddies or dock when I need them, to play or record.
