After a large search there's one thing I'm still unsure on.
All my surround speakers have been set to small with lfe to large fronts (Mission M74i's) and sub (M70AS)
I'm thinking now that I might get less muddy bass or boom by selecting mains also to small. At the moment my reciever crossover is set to 80hz as is my sub, but would I need to change both crossover settings if I set all speakers to small?

You don't have to set both Receiver and subwoofer crossovers at the moment. The receiver is already filtering the signal so it isn't necessary to have the sub doing the same thing as well. It is probably adviseable to set the subwoofer crossover to maximum and let the receiver do all of the filtering.

The best way to check whether your system sounds better with the speakers set to large or small is to try it out and see.
