What exactly is Sony's Bravia Theatre Sync?

What exactly is Sony's Bravia Theatre Sync? I have a Sony AV receiver (STR-DG910) and DVD Recorder (HXD970) and I want to buy a screen.

What I want to know is whether there is any advantage (apart from quality issues) of sticking with a Sony TV? Obviously it would be nice if everything worked smoothly together and the remotes were able to control all devices. But what does Bravia Theatre Sync actually achieve in this respect? Or does it just do what interconnected HDMI control devices would do anyway?

The manuals are not much use - all I can glean is that BTS will turn off all HDMI devices if the TV is turned off and will turn on the TV at the right input when you press play on the recorder. The receiver is supposed to support BTS but the manual doesn't even mention this.

Any Sony freaks out there worked this out?

If all your Sony kit supports HDMI 1.3, Bravia Theatre Sync simplifies control when everything is connected by HDMI.
If, say, I have just the tv on and I want to listen to audio through the amp, I can switch audio using the tv remote. This will mute the tv and turn the amp on. Any of the remotes can then control the volume from the chosen source.
Then if I start a dvd using the dvd remote, the amp automatically switches inputs.
Obviously my amp remote can control all the other devices but with BTS I rarely have to pick it up.

I prefer Theatre Mode when watching movies as it takes on a more cinematic appearance. Standard mode can be too harsh sometimes. You do have to be watching in a darkened room though to see the benefit.

An added bonus of the theatre mode button, which I found by accident and which has reference to my previous post, is that it not only changes the screen setting but it also powers up my amp and switches audio from tv to amp.

Well, it's not supposed to look 'vibrant' at all, it's supposed to provide a softer, more cinematic image.

What it is does is:

Drop the TV into the 'Cinema' preset - so you can tweak the settings of this preset if you wish

Drops the Film Mode into Auto1, which is really designed to detect and remove 3:2 pulldown repeated fields from NTSC film material.

As gpl1968 say, it will also turn on and switch over to HDMI connected home cinema amplifiers etc.
