Don't know about best, but the Liteon 163 or 165 are pretty good and are quiet during dvd playback. Not sure if they're available in black or not.

I like the slot load pioneers for sheer slickness, but have heard they can be quite noisy. Out of the 3 DVD roms in the household, my Pioneer A04 is actually the quietest, which surprised me a bit. During films it seems to slow down a huge amount, and is inaudable, although the rest of my HTPC is not as quiet as i'd like right now.

You need to replace the PSU fan with a Papst 19 or 20db fan, and replace the CPU heatsink and fan with a larger one so you can slow down the fan to make it quieter.

See some recentish threads for more info.

I know how to, its just extremely low on my list of priorities right now. I really need a decent length VGA - 5BNC cable first of all to move the HTPC from behind the sofa up to the rest of the Hifi rack!

I bought all the Van Damme cable and connectors to make a VGA - 5BNC cable when it looked like I was gonna go back to CRT. I didn't so all the bits are still sitting here. Cost me just over £70 but if you feel like a bit of soldering (or I will do it for you - got all the strain boots and everything) then happy to discuss a mutual price.

Better than having it all just sitting here. 10m of pucker Van Damme cable (thicj bugger with 5 individiual screened cores - same as The Media factory use) with all the proper VDC connectors. Just a thought.

Sorry if my reply sounded a bit rude Gary, so hard to tell when it's just text! I appreciate every helpful reply on these forums.

Messiah: Thanks for the offer mate, but i'm really skint right now, ended up having a barney last week and spent my last £45 on booze, and now have about £30 to last me till 24th September!
