The Tosh SD220E looks a damn fine player, gets fantastic reviews and is available MR from Richer Sounds for £145, I think.

From the reviews i've read that's the one I'd get if I didn't have too many players already

I know reviews aren't always accurate but this time I cannot see how everyone can be wrong or misguided.

cool, well i'll get one of these then. Just one thing, it doesn't say that this player can play dvdr's. And i would prefer it if it could. So can it?? Thanks,
    Rich

Also extremely worthy of consideration are the Sony DVP-NS300 or -NS305 and the Pioneer DV-444 or -454.

cross the Pioneer off your list. Quite a few complaints about light shading in RGB mode on various TV modes. I have the 444 playing on the Panasonic TX36PF10 and have a problem. currently viewing in S Video mode - Pioneer - simply just NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

It's just a pity people didn't start complaining when I was researching which one to buy !!

Pick up a Sony DVPNS700 for around £150 nowadays. Plays DVDr's and also does SACD which is awesome. It's a great bargain for the money. Also reasonable for CD playback.

    Go on.
